Hey there. Glad to see GC2 being worked on. Here's my suggestion(s)... You said 2D map in 3D engine. That's fine, but I still naively await the day when a strategy game brings in the z-axis to the strategic mix. You guys have been innovators...you can do it...maybe ;) Information is the key to a strategy game, and presentation is key to making it possible for someone to stare at the computer for hours and hours. Back when I was still comparing MOO3 to GC (GC won), one of the a

If there is an explanation, I bet it's the minor races...but, you would have heard of their appearance. Still, when minor races appear later on, everybody immediately gets diplomatic contact with them, which means they could intimidate them into surrendering some tech, which they start out hyped up on for game balance purposes. So, something probably needs to be done about this...the minor race should possibly be tweaked so as to treat the backward Altarians as a non-threat (maybe THEY
I'm happy to be in the top 100, although it seems I've been bumped out of that, too. Apolyton rocks. I never really took part in any of the community stuff until now (and even then, only VERY occaisonally) but GalCiv is a fun thing to discuss. I am not a hardcore strategy gamer; the other game I regularly play is Battlefield 1942, which I am considerably better at than GalCiv. Although, if I can just figure out how Ellestar is winning these damn Tiny-Masochistic games, I'll be
I won't go so far as to say it is impossible...I can imagine, if, oh, six or seven things had suddenly gone very right for me, I might have been able to hope for the eventuality of some extremely beneficial random events, battleaxes at every asteroid, 25% research at every anomaly, pray for 30 turns to rebuild my military-only economy to viability, and somehow forged at least one profitable alliance, I might have lasted until 2195. I want to read these AARs...if someone wins. <
There was even a note at some point that GalCiv was designed so that the race would surrender to an enemy of the race destroying it, as a final stab against them, but none of my allies ever surrender to me, they always surrender to an enemy...why? ~SDC~
Yeah...please fix the skull icon, it's just a nagging little thing, but as an omnipotent emperor, I don't like my citizens revolting without good reason. :p ~SDC~
I find it best to take the 'good' picks 90% of the time...except with planet quality. When those damn worms or whatever pop up, I almost always exterminate them for the 20-30% planet quality bonus I can get. Huge advantage before terraforming, totally shifts the center of power in my empire. I still can end up saintly by the end, with enough expansion. ~SDC~
Go to your GFX directory and open Message_RaceImage35.pcx (I use Photoshop) for a strange looking Alien species Is that Brad Wardell? ;p ~SDC~
Yeah, I want to know how to do that. ~SDC~
I think vocation and recreation are closely related. I'm a political science major, and spend a lot of time studying economy, so this is all very interesting to me. :) I want to run some tests too. Also, I don't see a problem with publishing formulas on how bonuses function. I don't think Stardock should be handing us the formulas on a silver platter, but if players discover them and want to use them, then by all means they should do so. If you want more chaos, go play Total Annihilatio
I second Kosty's idea, and think just about every menu ought to be collapsable. ~SDC~
I think the problem may be that the research screen simply does not update, much like the treasury, until you do something on the following turn. I could be totally wrong, but I've noticed that multiple times. So, in reality, there is probably a difference in time between 565/150 but the screen is just not updating properly. Which is broken, I agree. Instant feedback = essential for management. ~SDC~
Well, in the NEXT Galactic Civilizations game, it should be fully 3-d. I know it's hard to conceive of, but I can see a functional UI with a 3-d galaxy in my head. You could keep it like a gameboard, except at a slight angle so there's some depth, or you could be pioneering and make a real z-axis galaxy. With a planet list at the side, that would zoom immediately to that star, it wouldn't be so hard. The view could rotate slowly, at the player's discretion, so you get a good picture of where the
La Croix is a Lake (Lac La Croix) in Minnesota that is absolutley fantastic for canoeing. I have no idea what else it would refer to, except for the brand of bottled water. Leto - Duke Leto Atreides, Dune? Piers - Piers Anthony, clearly Heinlein - Duh. By the way, everybody read 'The Moon is a Harsh Mistress' Eula - End-User-License-Agreement? Anastasio - Trey Anastasio, Phish Garcia - Jerry Garcia, Grateful Dead Clarke, Asimov, Feist - Arthur C, Isaac, and Raymo
I watched it (by pure chance, so I'm surprised to see this thread) and it was alright. Star Trek is always a mixed bag of attempts to be 'realistic' or at least convincing, some contrived drama, and some crazy space stuff. TNG was fantastic fun, but face it, some of the episodes were ridiculous! The 'Die Hard Picard' episode (Starship Mine), for instance, is highly unbelievable, but we get to see Patrick Stewart killing bad guys with a crossbow. COOL. On the other hand, some were fantastic, and
Schrademan - It's probably rather likely that Sol usually does become the 'capital' of GalCiv empires in many respects, especially if you luck out with another habitable planet there. However, to extend your analogy slightly, remember that when migration occurs, one area often takes on an increased importance and the relative value of the original place declines. For instance, industry and business used to be exclusively concentrated on the eastern seaboard of the United States, and nob
This is a great idea. And I hope that Stardock will support it by modifying the metaverse. I'll bite...I've downloaded the game, and I'm gonna beat all of ya... :D ~SDC~
From Gamespy.com: ================== Strategy First this summer will publish a free expansion pack to Stardock's Galactic Civilizations to become available via Starkdock Central. Not only does the expansion pack promises a new difficulty level (Nightmare), it also features new technologies and a tool called the "Integrated Technology Navigator", which makes the browsing of the extended tech trees much easier to understand. The new expansion pack will include: Integrated Tec
Hmm, as for current politics, I dunno, but when I find out someone is destabilizing my civ, I typically bomb the crap out of them. :) ~SDC~
Yeah, fix your grammar and typos. Or, better yet, hire me to do it! ~SDC~
GalCiv goes fantasy? Remember what happened to Total Annihilation... Just being the Prophet o' Doom...beware the ides of sequel...but...publish the game anyway! Now! ~SDC~
I just invaded and conquered a Carinoid system, not their last system, and when the video for 'An invasion of a planet is an immense undertaking' played, it was the wrong video, it was the video that plays when a civilization has been completely conquered. It is repeatable. Invade the Rathra system. The savegame file is available at http://www.geocities.com/sablestone/BUG.zip ~SDC~
In one of the examples of play provided in the Galactic Encyclopedia Brad talks about the AI voting intelligently. However, the voting is only semi-intelligent, because there's never consensus on a particular option. Sure, they all want to limit evil races to a certain number of trade routes, but if they can't agree how many, even if they have a majority of good votes, they'll still lose. Just wanted to use this as an opportunity to further my case for UP reform. ~SDC~
