Sins Beta 2 - Technical Feedback - *Post Here*

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 2.

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 2 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, please install SmartException from the Free Stuff section of Stardock Central and reproduce it (if possible). Send the generated exception to: sinsbugs(at)stardock(dot)net along with a detailed description as outlined above. If Sins generates its own crash report, please follow the instructions on the dialog that pops-up (if you send in a Sins-generated report, you don't need to send in a SmartException one).

If you wish to give us non-technical feedback about Beta 2 (feature requests, gameplay suggestions, etc.), please post it here:

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/index.aspx?AID=155665

By keeping this information separate, it will go a long way towards us making Sins a better game!

Thanks!

Well I reinstalled XP on my second drive and loaded up Sins beta 2. Unlike Vista, it ran perfectly, no crashes, no screen freezes. I wonder what is causeing the freezes with the nvidia drivers on Vista?
the nvidia drivers as still super buggy

While I know my laptops 1.73 GHz and 504 MB are under specs, I just recently tried tinkering with the highest graphics setting after looking at some beautiful screen shots on the new site. It played a 3 star 10 hard AI game on the highest settings with slow downs only when full zoom out to full zooming in and when clicking between fleets in different star systems. It played the few minutes I had on high perfectly. I have had been playing on low and thought the game was pretty enough. Now I'm sitting to medium, because I personally think the ships look grittier that way. But in any event B E A UTIFUL!

I am new to the whole forum thing , but I really really hope , (sorry if this is of topic for this thread), but ur game will have the spec requirements for dual core, if indeed it does take advantage of hyper threading or muilti threading in dual cores ( i'm presuming there basically the same thing , one being a virtual dual core and one being two physical cores)?? plz will some one clarify and beg to god tht they put both sets of specifications on the game box etc..
Last thing I heard was that Sins will not be optimized for dual core... I could be wrong...

Hyper-Threading is not the same as having a dual-core CPU.   Dual-core > HT (though the next gen of Intel's dual- and quad-cores will also have hyper-threading tech added).

Sins is currently not optimized for multi-core processors, but it's something we're looking at.

As I have stated before, I'm of the opinion that this is a must for this kind of game and the same goes for Direct-X 10.

kl thanks all for help, and I hope u guys get the developers (yarlen) to incorporate dual cores , cause it wud run alot better , I mean would it be that hard to develop dual cores into the programing? wudnt it just be cherry ontop, rather than the meat? lol sorry bout the Anecdote

ERROR MESSAGE :

I had just left the "Advanced Interface" tutorial and was arriving on the Menu.

A series of small letters and numbers, in RED, was superimposed on top of the center of the screen. It composed the following message :

Sync Error. [Player=0] [Tick=45270]

The message did not interfere with clicking and navigating around, but followed me when I went to examine other menus and screens. I could have tested to see if the message would follow me into another tutorial chapter, but instead, I quit the game. When I restarted the game, the red message was not there anymore. I tried two more tutorial chapters and it did not reappear after exiting out of them.

The new forums are bothering me. when i click my midle mouse button i can move the text part of the forums around slightly and it obscures the far left side.

Normal:

After i click and move:

its not really that bad, just annoying when i do it on accident.

Edit: sorry that the pics dont line up, i blame paint and me being too lazy to use photoshop.

It's not that simple, but we're looking at it.

found a bug, not too sure if anyone has posted it, with so many threads and forums and no real bug tracker Im unsure if this has been reported or not, I used a green icon pyramid with a bar across, another AI used the same icon but blue, when I found his planets, his icons were the same colour as mine, what is more the planet info was saying that the planet was -1 from my my home planet, I know the -1 is a known issue but it wasn't my planet, but I was unable to do anything with the planet, (which is good)

PS maybe its time to really think about a bug tracker forum, it will make everyone's live a whole lot easier to track bugs

Refinery ships can load up at an incomplete extractor. Not sure if that is intentional.

I had a carrier cruiser "autoattacking" a target... Not sure what it was hoping to accomplish without any guns. Can provide a screenshot if needbe.

Was told that I didn't have enough ship slots left when I actually did.

Sins still makes my comp go weird
when ever sins is ended, everything is messed up, like notepad needs 100% of a core, and if i start notepad again, it just takes another core to 100%

edit:
the sinsofasolarempire.exe process was closed before the screenshot

Hi all - The quickest and easiest way to find out if your issue's already been mentioned is to check out Kryo's daily roundup thread:

It's much faster than reading through every post.

MAJOR FREEZE-CRASH (3rd occurrence : see my reply #50 for a full account of the 2 other events + my system specs).

Symptoms : Sudden loss of mouse + loss of keyboard + frozen game-screen + slight sound stuttering.

No Ironclad or Smart Exception report was initiated because everything seemed frozen (except the repetitive sound stuttering).

When? : On the first 2 occasions (see reply #50), I was doing nothing (not even touching the mouse & keyboard). This time, the freeze seemed to follow an abrupt movement I made with the mouse (to go and select something fast).

Immediate solution : No functional mouse + no functional keyboard >> Press the reboot button. (No Windows error-message during & after reboot. Could reload and continue game easily.)

Differences with events 1 & 2 : It happened after 2 hours of problem-free play in a custom game. I was not playing in a window anymore. I had disabled hardware audio (because of the sound stuttering, I believed the SB Live card might be considered as a possible cause, even though this type of freeze-crash never happens in my other games.)
I took great care to close all possible running programs before launching the game. And this time, I had Smart Exception on, but the crash seems to have frozen it out of the action too. I could enjoy a lot more game-time than when the 2 previous events had occured during the tutorial.

I don't know what the "Show Dust Clouds" option does :

Checked or unchecked, that option does not seem to have any effect on the appearance of the game.

P.S. What I described in the previous post just happened for a 4th time : abrupt loss of mouse + loss of keyboard + game & system freeze + repetitive audio stutter.

On this occasion, the game was paused and I was not touching anything. Odd : It does not happen in my other games. Only solution left, then : press the reboot button. No Windows or Ironclad or SmartException error-reporting message.

I can play on small galaxies on high settings with all the bells and whistles on no problem. On large galaxies however once I start getting to around 50 planets, with all of them fully developed, it starts getting really "laggy". The zoom in and out and moving the view around gets slower, and the mouse gets sluggish. I tried turning the settings to lowest, and turning all the effects off, but it doesn't help much at all. I'm pretty well above the minimum requirements, only thing I'm not well above on is the RAM.

I tried modding to add in more logistics, and on large maps thats even worse, so it's something about the number of units (more logistics = more refinery and trade ships).
It's not accessing my hard drive all that much so I don't think it's needing to use the pagefile.

I don't know what the "Show Dust Clouds" option does :

Checked or unchecked, that option does not seem to have any effect on the appearance of the game.

Actually there are dust clouds, but they're very subtle.  This is easiest to see on a bright skybox, but on certain planets when you pan the camera around the sky you'll sometimes spot one.

Thanx, Yarlen. I shall re-select the SDC option, and go visually hunting for those rare & subtle celestial phenomena.
_________________________________________

Concerning my previous posts (#50, 117 & 118), which described a total game & system freeze, it happened to me for a 5th time, yesterday evening, but that time, I could un-freeze and continue the game! The sequence of events was :

1. Loss of mouse functionality
2. Music then switched to a repetitive audio stuttering
3. BUT this time, I still had keyboard functionality, because when I tested it by pressing the CapLock key a few times, the corresponding keyboard light went on & off...
4. And lo & behold, my CapLock dance seemed to un-freeze the game : the music came back, the mouse came back, and ships moved again.

In my 4 previous freeze-crashes, the loss of mouse & keyboard appeared to happen at the same time, so I could not execute step 3 -- but I will have to check if it's just a question of being fast enough to un-freeze the program with the keyboard (before it turns off).

The only change I had done in the set-up of the game, between crash #4 and crash #5, was to re-select audio hardware support (SB Live Value), since de-selecting that option had not prevented crashes #3 & #4. I don't know if that helped, especially since I don't know if the cause of those freeze-crashes is audio-related (the sound stuttering might just be a secondary symptom).

What is strange is that on most of those crashes, I was not even touching the mouse & keyboard : event #4 even occurred when the game was paused! (Which might point to an audio-related cause, since the music still plays when the game is paused.)

No Ironclad or SmartException or Windows error-ID window has ever appeared in those 5 cases.

i have noticed that when u have adaptive shielding on auto it activates as soon as u can even if the ship int even being shot at which is stupid.

saw that also, and it seems to activate a lot more than I'd like...

I found a bug in the Advanced Logistics tutorial.

At the part where it asks you to build a trade port at both your Terran planet and Desert planet, if you put down 1 Trade Port on the Terran planet, but then scuttle it, and build a new one, still on the Terran planet, then the tutorial will skip ahead to the next part.
Or you could build two Trade Ports on the Terran Planet and the tutorial will still skip ahead.
Summary: It just counts how many Trade Ports you build, not where.
