Sins Beta 2 - Technical Feedback - *Post Here*

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 2.

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 2 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, please install SmartException from the Free Stuff section of Stardock Central and reproduce it (if possible). Send the generated exception to: sinsbugs(at)stardock(dot)net along with a detailed description as outlined above. If Sins generates its own crash report, please follow the instructions on the dialog that pops-up (if you send in a Sins-generated report, you don't need to send in a SmartException one).

If you wish to give us non-technical feedback about Beta 2 (feature requests, gameplay suggestions, etc.), please post it here:

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/index.aspx?AID=155665

By keeping this information separate, it will go a long way towards us making Sins a better game!

Thanks!

Bug in Basic Crew Training
In Beta 1, after researching Basic Crew Training, new Capital Ships had level 2 experience. In Beta two, even after 2 levels of researching Basic Crew Training, new Capital Ships have only level 1 experience.

I received an "our planet is under attack" message for a planet that I no longer owned. Though I do believe that I still has some structures in orbit. But someone else owned the planet (ally poached it after pirates bombed it back to the stone age).\

Ally said "Where do you think you're going? It had better not be X" when they had requested help defending X.

Various other threats from allies: "Get off of X or you will pay", "Your destruction is inevitable."

Had ally ask me to help defend one of my own planets... not sure if that is intentional behavior.

Not a technical issue per se but I had a command cruiser use embolden on a trade ship... someone please demote the captain of that ship.

In beta 2 the crew training changed. It now allows you to train to higher levels. It doesn't cause your ships to come out at a higher level. Read the description in the research tree to see what I mean.

when you say train, do you mean buy higher levels?

ah ok, well i did see that happen... phffft....

there should have been read me notes of changes between beta 1 and 2...

Graphical Issue

Disclaimer: this is my first post, and though I've been scanning the forums to a degree, I'm not sure if this has been addressed —

Whenever I open Sins, both in the main menu background and the game-space background, rather than the white pinprick stars against black, all I see is a quilt of large, multicolored pixels. These pixels (that's the best way I can describe them) are definitely in the background because they do not cover any 3D rendered objects; but, because they are bright, they make seeing planets, structures and ships difficult. Also, by randomly changing the screen resolution and "sample" number (2 Samples, 4 Samples, Non-Maskable), I can get the game to display the proper starry background rather than the large pixels. However, if I play a game with multiple star-systems, by changing the display settings, I can fix one system, but never both.

Other than that, the game runs perfectly, and is AWESOME — simply the best strategy game I have ever played. Terrific job, and thanks.

System Specs

Note: I have a 2006 15" MacBook Pro, and run both OS X and Vista (with no problems what-so-ever, with either OS or their games) via Apple's "Bootcamp." I run Sins on Vista

Vista
Intel Core Duo
2.16 GHz Processor
2 GB RAM
256 Radeon X 1600
DirectX 9c/10?
--I know I have the latest version of DirectX (though I don't have a DX 10 capable graphics card), I just don't know what that version is...

For the record, we're not supporting Bootcamp or virtualized operating systems like Parallels, or any other kind of Windows emulators.

If you could post a screenshot of what you're getting, however, that would be useful.

@Xirae - I hope you have Vista Ultimate or Business because otherwise the M$ Gods will hunt you down and do naughty things to you since virtualization is prohibited on the lower end (read as cheaper) versions of Vista.

Heh, no worries there, Spartan. I'm running Vista Business with full legality (CD, Key and everything) -- and if I weren't, I wouldn't be broadcasting it online anyway.

Also, I recognize that Sins doesn't support Bootcamp, but considering that I've had no problems with any other game I run on Vista (namely Rome: TW, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and SupCom), it just strikes me that this may have more to do with Sins than with me (I may be very wrong, however, as I am not a programmer...at all).

Here are the screens you requested (there are several):

Got a crash. Despite saving mere seconds before it happened I was unable to reproduce it. Dump file: LINKEY LINK

This math doesn't add up:

Notice the most recent bounty notice. "Increased by 500 to a total of 380.
were you being attacked by anyone between the time of the bounty increases?
I wasn't fighting the person that got the bounty increase but it's quite possible that someone else was (or pirates). It could be caused by the delay between the bounty being put on them and the report of it (it gives you a few seconds to keep clicking on more so that it comes out as one report rather than a series of "increased by 250's").

Yarlen - I'm not too sure what it is on this computer, but in the device manager it seemts to be the Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset Family. There is no actual card, just what is on the motherboard. Also, I'm not sure if this is a related problem or not, but I remember that when I started the game, the background was of an orange looking universe, in recent times (of the same file) it is green.

There are several skyboxes, including those colors. Which is shown on the title screen varies.

greetings, I have just started the beta2 of sse and am liking it so far I just started the first tutorial and they sent me to the next planet, i killed the pirates then it tells me to take my ships to the planet.. which i did, i killed the population on the planet then it said to scout the planet.. i again select my ships they say they are moving then they just sit there and wont scout the planet and the tutorial is stuck at that point and wont go any further. I have tried numerous times to get the ships to go to the planet using the move command then right clicking the planet and move then left clicking the planet icon .. they verbally say they are moving yet they do not go there and scout the planet as the tutorial seems to want them to do to progress. am i doing something wrong or is this a bug?

autosave is in the game, but you have to edit a file to activate it... i forget which file it is too

Autosave is in c:\documents and settings\username\application data\ironclad games\sins of a solar empire\setting\usersetting.setting. Look for GS_AUTOSAVE.

Salaena, thx for the report - this will be fixed in  next patch.

Tutorial:
- First tutorial I had the pirate bug.
- 4th tute (advanced logistics) halted waiting on broadcast tower building, even though it was built.

Hmm, that's not even close to the video card I've got (Radeon X850).   Well, thanks for the info, we'll keep looking into it.

Don't think you need tech specs for this one. Not sure if this has been reported yet or not:

I play against 3-6 computer opponents in a single player game on the large map. Like to spread out a bit before encounting anyone. Problem is that doesn't happen. Map is typically generated with 3 stars. And ALL of us are placed on the same star.

Not really sure if that is a bug or not. Would expect if playing with 6 total players, that it would be 2 per star on a 3 star map.

On the part about the different color backgrounds, I dont mean the background of the title screen, but the background in the game file itself is what changed. If this is a normal thing then ok, but I would kind of assume that a universe would stay the same color in a single game.

1. It is impossible to move in the Sun's gravity well, any clickage results in fleets jumping out of the well.

2. Units jump back and forth between "moving to a friendly ship" and "attacking" when their attack behavior is set to "weapons range" in range of enemies. Clicking on a point in space does not result in the same problem.
