Sins Beta 2 - Technical Feedback - *Post Here*

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 2.

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 2 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, please install SmartException from the Free Stuff section of Stardock Central and reproduce it (if possible). Send the generated exception to: sinsbugs(at)stardock(dot)net along with a detailed description as outlined above. If Sins generates its own crash report, please follow the instructions on the dialog that pops-up (if you send in a Sins-generated report, you don't need to send in a SmartException one).

If you wish to give us non-technical feedback about Beta 2 (feature requests, gameplay suggestions, etc.), please post it here:

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/index.aspx?AID=155665

By keeping this information separate, it will go a long way towards us making Sins a better game!

Thanks!

Hi guys,

I just finished a 0.76[b].018 game with a small galaxy and pirates off. I faced off against three hard opponents, with two on a team and the other without any team.

Noticed three bugs, two odd ones and one minor.

1) Mysterious disappearing units. From the screenshot below, notice how there are a lot of units heading further and further away from the gravity well (they are not phase jumping BTW). It seems, somehow, that two of the enemy flak frigates became "invisible/missing/maybe something else". I only noticed this once units are set to the gravity attack setting. When I double click on the units I get a screen where I am unable to zoom and seen anything.

2) Lots and Lots of Idle AI units. These units have the sense that they want to phase jump but don't. You'll notice what I mean from the screenshot below (BTW that message about a culture flip is not the planet you see in the screenshot, obviously ). These units did not persue after my smaller squad. They only sent one or two units, including one cap ship, to attack me. I was even able to bomb the planet to nothing and after that, they teleported away.... -_-

3) Bounty amount does not update when one enemy is destroyed (see screenshot). This is only a minor issue: the infocard shows that the bounty for the Armada faction is at 0 but the mainscreen still shows an amount.

Please send your save game file where this is happening along with the above description to support(at)ironcladgames(dot)com.

Will do. I seem to only have a save of the 'mysteriously disappearing units' bug

I have just started a new game: custom map (nothing too big, 30 planets with 2 stars), 2 opponents, no marauders.
One of the opponents almost immediately after meeting me suggested an alliance which I accepted.
A problem that I encountered: Sometimes, when both of our ships were at a planet together and I was zoomed out from that planet, his color would show up in the "tick mark" graphic that shows ships at a planet but mine wouldn't be displayed. If I zoomed to the planet then my ship would be there but my tick mark still wouldn't display. If I had a sizable force at the planet (3 or more ships) then my tick marks would begin to be displayed. If I had a single ship at a planet without any allied ships then my tick mark is displayed correctly.
Another problem I found was that the allied player would send me comms that made no sense. He would tell me to assist his forces at a planet that we were attacking several minutes ago but now was being left alone. When I looked at the planet in question, his forces were nowhere near it.

Another problem that I encountered during my game with 2 opponents: The diplomacy dialog doesn't report the current bounty correctly. I put a bounty on the non-allied opponent. After a time I got a message that I had payed out all of the bounty that I had placed on the player. When I looked back at the diplomacy dialog the bounty was still there. I had assumed that it would decrease to 0 as that player's ships were killed.
I think that the bounty system needs to be explained a bit more. Does the amount in the dialog decrease as it is claimed or is it a tally of the total bounty that has been put against a player? How much is each kill worth? Is it a set amount or a percentage of the total bounty? Does killing more powerful ships result in a higher bounty claimed or is every ship worth the same amount. Does destroying structures get you any of the bounty?
Personally, I think that capital ships should be worth more than cruisers, then frigates and then civilian craft. I think that destroying structures should net you some part of the bounty but I don't know what would be a fair part.

scroll wheel will only zoom out not in, I just find that very annoying

and the control of the keyboard commands for zooming are too quick (did not see an option to change this)

I had the bug where no ships would fire but only the first time I played the game, Other than that I have played for over 50hours total now and have had no bugs.

The number in the menu is the current bounty against someone, it will decrease as ships get killed. I'm not sure of the formula to decide bounties on specific items, but if you mouse over an enemy ship or structure, it will tell you how much bounty it is worth.

Thanks Stratteggi, that helps a lot. Now I will be able to know what ships are worth.

I still think I saw a problem where the amount was not going down on the diplomacy screen. It may have been that the allied player put more bounty on the other player but I don't remember seeing that it had been increased.

I encountered another problem last night. It was at the end of a game.
I was in an intense battle at the non-allied player's last planet (I didn't know that at the time). After a short time 2 of the 3 cap ships I had in the battle turned around and jumped back to the planet we had just come from.
Do the cap ships have a self-preservation AI? When I looked at them (just before sending them back into the fight) they hadn't taken too much damage to shields and no damage to their hulls.

After the fight I was presented with the Victory banner. I chose to continue just to see what would happen. At that point one of my 16 frigates decided it was time to go back to the planet we jumped from. I didn't click anything and it wasn't selected so I know I didn't send it there accidentally.

The sound of by the Robotic Cruiser is really annoying
It can go on and on for 20-30 seconds.
Can be heard in the gameplay video part 6

I put it here since i believe its a bug

I still need the icons above planets to go away when selecting cinematic view.

I am a good way into my second game with the latest patch, and now find that I can not load any saved games. Crashes every time.

I've got two minor graphics bugs:

8800GTX
4600+ Athlon 64 x2
2 GB DDR2 533 RAM

If you bombard a planet while the game is minimized to browse forums (say because you've got a BC auto-bombarding an auto-turned colony it just auto-dropped, testing the waters behind the frontlines) the missiles "pile up" into a massive mega nuke.

Also, if you zoom in on a phase line (extreme zoom) where a cultural conflict is occuring (say, pushing back enemy culture lines to try and let you colonize the above asteroid), then scroll away from the conflict point, the phase line itself appears to vanish. Please note that I reproduced this on one phase line that went at a nearly perfect diagonal across my screen, scrolling to the lower left, into the enemy culture. DOn't know what other combinations cause this, I'm going to try and fiddle some more.

Edit:

Also, fighters occasionally don't have models when I zoom in -- usually when they are not firing at an enemy, and not next to their carrier. E. G. flying to enemy vessel, or sitting on top of a jump point on the other side of a grav well from their carrier.

Edit:

Yet another bug. I remember seeing another post about this kind of bug. I just invaded an enemy system, and it had a kodiak million light years above the plain of the game... I just can't find the thread. Should I send the e-mail in (and, if so... what's the e-mail again?)?
