Sins Beta 2 - Technical Feedback - *Post Here*

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 2.

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 2 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, please install SmartException from the Free Stuff section of Stardock Central and reproduce it (if possible). Send the generated exception to: sinsbugs(at)stardock(dot)net along with a detailed description as outlined above. If Sins generates its own crash report, please follow the instructions on the dialog that pops-up (if you send in a Sins-generated report, you don't need to send in a SmartException one).

If you wish to give us non-technical feedback about Beta 2 (feature requests, gameplay suggestions, etc.), please post it here:

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/index.aspx?AID=155665

By keeping this information separate, it will go a long way towards us making Sins a better game!

Thanks!

I cant seem to get more ships. I always reach the max slots, and there is nothing I can do to increase it. Yet I see the A.I's have way more ship than I do. I think the amount of ship I have should be limited to the amount of resources that I have and the level of ships be due to the research that I have done.

I thought the amount of ships you can have is mainly controlled by how many planets under your control, but I believe there is a way to increase it further by upgrading planet owned.

I just took a break from a 4 hour round of Sins and thought I'd report the only bug I've encountered so far. There were probaly more, but I was so engrossed in the game, that this is all I noticed.
- A bounty message said that the bounty on the Arn was increased to 2000 and is now at 1940, it was previously at 0.

Great game, its almost everything I wanted and more than what I expected.

The game keeps freezing graphically but continues to run. The sound is still going and the voice that advertises messages still goes but on screen everything stops. So far I have found a way out of it, I do the 'alt+tab" thing and go to the desktop and then go back to the game and everything that was frozen now jumps to were it actually is. It is annoying when it happens during battles especially. I can hear shots being fired and explosions but not until I do the alt+tab combo do I know what exactly happened. It did it a little bit with only one star, I was trying it out with 4 stars and 20 planets and it is doing it almost every 4 minutes. It runs fine between the graphical freezes. And on the one star game it unfroze graphically by itself after a few seconds, and only did that once in a very long while.

Is there some sort of error logging file? I looked and couldn't find one, or I don't know what it is if there is one. Is smart exception supposed to be logging stuff for it? Because it isn't.

Uglycow, is it possible you have AutoSave enabled? It would freeze the game around every 3-4 minutes. You can check this in c:\documents and settings\username\application data\sins of a solar empire\setting\user.setting file (notepad will open it) and check if Autosave is enabled. If so, change it to FALSE.

-If you select a bunch of scattered ships at a system and order them to another, they will use the same jump off point, even if they have to travel all the way across the system to do it. This isn't efficient if you want them to go faster, which is the usual reason not for using formation jump.

>Here< we can see a single frigate that decided it was too cool to stay with the command cruisers for no apparent reason. (Same orders.)

>Here< is another interesting one. When I changed out my Kol's bombers for fighters, the bombers scuttled. Normal, right, But the models stayed there for a few seconds after the explosions, then vanished. Then I looked closely and I could still 'see' the stats on mouseover. It didnt see to effect the game any (I'm not sure what happened to them later.) Note that I was using modified larger squads.

2 (3) more bugs from Multi

For some reason my constructor wont build my trade station

And again, for some reason, when i what to move my units, within this star grav well, they put a destination to another planet..

Savegame can be delivered if nessesary

edit:
another bug hah, ships wont attack a planet

Gripe with the Kol: The beams lose definition when they arn't close up...it doesnt look right.

Also, maybe its just me, but the beam damage is terrible.
Tho it is a known issue ill mention it here anyway. Replays still dont work, and ctd within the 1st few seconds of play.

I also noticed the constructors not building structures. I wind up having to scuttle, and reordering to get constructors to build.

Once more im here

Fighters disapear when they get near this asteroid. It kinda looks like they are landing..
Well the image, doesnt show it happening, but its the cursed one haha

Savegame can also elivered for this bug, if nessesary

When queueing LEV duties via clicking on a planet that has more than one LEV, only one of the LEVs does everything, leaving the other LEVs idle, thus resulting in massive inefficiency.

Not seeing this myself--I very often have multiple defenses under construction at once and I always give the orders via the planet.

If you've upgraded all the ship supply levels on your planets, you can also try relocating your capital to a more central location for a quick boost. Once I'd conquered my entire starting system in my current game, moving my capital netted me a quick 150+ supply just from decreasing the allegiance hit on the most recently conquered worlds.

can a mod, correct my image location?
where it says "bkoirion", should be corrected to "bkorion"

I have the same experience as kyro: when I issue build order from the planet, the LEVs automatically split up the work between them. I have not looked to see whether or not the closest unit is always assigned the first available task, but I haven't had any problems with LEVs remaining idle while their counterparts do all the work.

Yeah I agree , for 4 huge beams firing , they seem to do very little damage, and only offer eye candy...

I'd like to throw out an idea or two on shield FX:

A: Shields are display faintly, starting the moment shields drop below 100%, while applying the usual "more impacts - more visible" after that.
B: Shields display faintly, whenever enemy ships are in the same system, while applying the usual "more impacts - more visible" after that.

At the moment, it's incredibly hard to tell which ships still have shields, and the effects is generally a little too "subtle".

have to agree there, shields are pretty hard to see, they need to be more visible and striking to the player

Hmm odd.. I'm pretty sure I saw this happen. Maybe I have to wait a bit longer? Hmm.. The next time I play I'll see if I can get reproduce it or if I was making too quick an assumption

I like the shields

Suffered a hard reboot in the middle of a game, no apparent cause. No minidump and no smartexception. :?

I just ran into an odd situation where I was playing on a small galaxy with just 3 other computers (one red, blue, and yellow), and the momment I killed yellow it said that each person was victorious and gave me an option to continue or end the game, even though I was only allied with one of the other comps, the other comp I had no relations with at the time. Anyone else have this problem?

Another one I have noticed at times (dont have a pic of) is that some times when I am looking at the backround of the stars and whatnot I sort of see a dark line running through it vertically. It's not like a flat line, sort of blobish but if it isnt supposed to be there then it might have something to do with the texture of the background. I would assume if the texture was actually just a square picture that is sort of wrapped as a cylinder around the camera, then I guess that this dark area is where the two ends meet.

But it only freezes like that on 4 star or larger galaxies. I played with max amount of ai on the smallest galaxy and it never froze like that. Once in a long while it would jerk, seem to freeze but it didn't. I was playing on a 4 or 5 star galaxy with 4 ai players and it started doing that.

I have Vista and even if I change the security settings for c:\documents and settings\ it still denies me access to that. All the allow boxes are checked down the line for "everyone", "(me)", and "system", but the operating system will still not allow me to even view anything in that folder. I do have administrative access on my computer and I do have it so is shows all hidden and system files. So at the moment there is no way for me to tell if the autosave is even working and I certainly can't change it even if I were able to see the file.

How come this file isn't put in the regular documents folder with every other game?
Nevermind. I found the file in this directory on Vista, interesting.

"C:\Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\Setting"

Here is what is typed in the file concerning autosave when I opened it.

GS_AUTOSAVE FALSE
AUTOSAVE_INTERVAL 300

So autosave is off, (if I'm reading the correct line in the file), so it's not the autosave.

Beta 2 : Major freeze-crashes during the tutorial (on 21 June).

I'm new to the SSE beta. I have downloaded B2 on 21 June and have only played on that day, attempting to do the tutorial. TWO major crashes then happened, which made me lose interest in the game (for a few days).

Before you blame my computer, please be aware that the "freeze-crashes" I will describe have NEVER happened before in any of my numerous PC games. Also, please consider that my XP/SP2 system NEVER crashes (no BSOD, for example). I maintain a very clean system, thanks to daily antiviral + antimalware scans + registry cleaning. The Windows checkdisk function also indicates that my system is error-free (when the check is done during a reboot). DXdiag also indicates that my system is error-free.

Consequently, it is obvious to me that something in the SSE program enters into conflict with my system. Unfortunately, I have not found on this forum anybody else who seemed to have the same type of problem. Also unfortunate is the issue that the "freeze" does not allow SSE's own error-reporting window to appear and to generate a .dmp file in the MiniDump (I have checked at the appropriate location, and no MiniDump folder has been created yet.)

GENERAL DESCRIPTION. Game-screen freezes + Mouse-cursor freezes + Keyboard becomes dead-frozen (no keys work!) + a faint sound stuttering is heard, endlessly stuck in repetition.

SITUATIONS. It happened twice, on 21 June. I have not been into SSE since then, prefering to play at the new "Lost Empire" TBS/4X (which does not "freeze" on me). The first time, I was into the 1st chapter of the tutorial. Without pausing the game, I stopped playing for a few minutes to focus on the TV. I was not touching the mouse or the keyboard, and the game suddenly froze by itself : the stuttering sound alerted me to the problem, before I realized that nothing was moving on the screen and that I had lost mouse & keyboard functionality. The 2nd time, I was into the 3rd chapter of the tutorial. Again, the game was not paused, and I had stopped touching mouse & keyboard for 5 minutes to take a rest : the game froze by itself, and I was again alerted by the faint stuttering sound coming out of the speakers. Note that before, I had paused the game for 30 minutes to eat supper when I was into the 2nd chapter of the tutorial : that did not make the game freeze. Both "freeze-crashes" occured when the game was unpaused + when I was not touching the mouse & keyboard. It froze by itself!

WHAT HAPPENED NEXT. No crash window appeared : no SSE error-window, no Windows error-window, no BSOD, nothing! Note that I was playing in window-mode since my 19-inch widescreen was set at a 1440 X 900 resolution. The game-window was frozen at a certain point in the intersideral action, and I could see my desktop beyond its margins. I could not close the game-window (or alt/tab) because I then had no mouse & keyboard functionality. There were NO graphical anomalies within the game-window & my desktop's visuals : but there was that audio anomaly, a faint repetitive stuttering. I then had only one interesting option : press the reboot button on the PC's tower. I did that and came back to my desktop WITHOUT having been informed by Windows that a problem had occured. As far as WinXP was concerned, nothing had happened. I then easily got back into the game's main menu, as if nothing had happened : except that I had to restart the tutorial chapter. Since I purchased & downloaded "Lost Empire" on 21 June (the very same day as Beta 2), I decided to dedicate the next few days in that game. I will go back to SSE/B2, after having installed Stardock's SmartException program. Pehaps, next time, SE will identify the problem's context, since Ironclad's own error-reporting program seems to freeze with the game!

Your tech persons can obtain my DXdiag info if you tell me where to e-mail the file. For now, I can state that I have those relevant specs :

WinXP/SP2 (up-to-date)
1024 MB of RAM with a 4 GB fixed page-file!
Pentium 4 @ 2.8 GHz (the model of 3 years ago)
A new Enermax 485-W powersupply
DirectX 9.0c (up-to-date)
Asus GeF 6800 (512 MB vram model) with May 2007 Nvidia drivers (9424)
Creative SB Live with March 2002 drivers (no newer one exists)
DirectX reports NO problems with the video & audio
Antivirus & Antimalware programs had been disabled during SSE
No non-essential program was running in the background !

Thank you for reading all that stuff! I'm not angry : there are many months of beta to come.
