I'm playing on steam, main scenario, no mods. Learning the game. At some point recently in almost every combat, my sovereign and 1 "mage" character are off on the edge of the map, where they cannot move or do much. This has led to unnecessary losses of units etc and is making the game very frustrating to play. I've got about as many games on steam as on impulse and gamersgate - plus a few from other sources. steam was ok until I hit about 50+ games and suddenly the disadvantages become annoying Steam is my last choice unless I really need the multiplayer support, for the following reasons: impossible to run it on two machines at once. He's right about dwarf fortress though - losing is fun. It's just incredible the amount of emergent behaviour you get. It's also phenomenally difficult to see and pick up, being a rogue style ascii art game, but it is the same kind of exploratory-but-hectic gameplay that people seem to experience in minecraft. Except of course your dwarves, who have lives, tastes, ideas, personalities, crises etc. no matter what you do...
