Will each update, along the SoaSE line, invalidate the previous versions saved game files?

It depends upon the sorts of changes made in a particular update. As savegames store the data they're started with, that mostly boils down to mechanical changes or anything affecting internal data structures. So not always, but I wouldn't rely on it.
Generally, no. We've done a lot of work to make sure that doesn't happen.
Even my pre-gold save still works - albeit, with old data inside of it.
