Elemental: Game Play Example – Part 6

Rise of the Paladins

image

The Order of the Paladin was the result of the miracle at Hinern. The mighty Crusaders, armed with the best Capitar could offer, had fallen almost instantly in battle while the Channeler, Roland alone had brought low the mighty Emperor of Yithril.

A whole sale movement towards equipping soldiers with magical equipment had thus grown to fruition with the Order of the Paladin being the result.

The 23rd year of Roland’s reign..

image The Empire of Yithril had constructed Hinern in such a way to bottle up the fledgling Kingdom of Capitar [AI note: That’s right, the shape of your city does have strategic importance and the AI does and will make use of that].

imageAnd a powerful sorceress she would become.

A Dance with Dragons

image So powerful had Roland’s daughter become that it was said that even the mighty dragons preferred her company.

But in truth, Roland, having mastered the art of diplomacy, had put great effort into seeking out and gaining the trust of the legendary creatures.

image [Developer’s note: We have since tweaked the defense of dragons to be somewhat higher]

Dragons are immensely powerful but one little known fact about them, they are expensive to keep fed. Over 6 gildars a month was spent feeding them.

And so it was with dragons and other creatures of might that Kalypso, the most powerful Channeler of her generation, marched to war to deal with the menace of Yithril once and for all.

You can see a quick video of the dragon and Kalypso approaching here:

And the battle:

imageOnly Kalypso would survive the battle.

image

“Perhaps,” Roland said to his daughter, “If we cannot defeat them on the battle field, we can starve them out.”

Wait a minute...that Full Fledged Dragon got wiped out by a bunch of peon soldiers? Yeah, they need a boost. I liked it better when Dragons could take on massive forces of people at once. ;)

Army of Capitar... 666... :P

Very cool. Very very cool. :) A pity that there is no video of the battle. Would have been awesome.

Peons?

They had massive massive numbers of archers.

Strange, you were ranked at 666(not a good number in my book) and they were 387 and they won?  Is that a bug of some sort?  Thats almost double what they are, but perhaps the dragon was the most of it, and if the dragon died that would explain it.

Is a Dragon a roaming monster you can talk to and try to get on your side with diplomacy ?

Poor scouting on my part.

This is what happens when you don't have any calvalry. I was a paper tiger. By the time I reached all their archers, they had mowed me down.

Anyway, hours are moving sooooo slow ... can't wait to make my damn whole story ! }:)

Oh and btw, you seem to have discovered only a small part of the world.Do you still have lots of thing to do (i mean research building, etc...) or is it close to just mass troops and try to conquer everything now ?

Just trying to understand how long is the developpement through the game.

Ahh, well, that makes it better. I consider Any human to be a "peon" when compared to a Full On Dragon ;). In my mind it should take a couple hundred archers all using magical arrows to hurt a Dragon. That's just me though. It comes from years of reading Dragonlance and watching "The Hobbit" cartoon seeing Smog the Dragon toast huge armies.

Im sorry, someone rolls up on my city wall with a dragon i probably wet myself ;)

S.R.

P.S. Froggy ;) does Roland eventually go on a quest to find tactical multi player battles?

I'm of the mind that if you can't beat something by sheer force, beat it by sheer numbers.

Statistically speaking, Capitar was superior to Yithril. But Yithril had more people fighting for them. So at the end of the day, while the dragon and assorted Capitarian soldiers were able to do some damage, they got paper-cut to death.

The fact that having a dragon and a few nice soldiers doesn't equal automatic win just shows - you can't play the game as a dance with numbers. There is so much more to take into account to win a war than just having the strongest soldiers.

I do wonder, though...does losing a dragon have any affect on the nation as a whole, aside from being a lost unit? I'd think that if you frequently lost powerful units, like dragons, would make recruiting them all the more difficult.

Btw, i want to ride a dragon and get my movement go up, wreck trees, make him cast spells and ravage the land ! }:)

Kalypso... *drooleth*

Ahem! No, bad Xaltwind! Focus!
Yes, very excitig indeed, I was certain that Roland's lovely daughter and her draconic ally would wipe the floor with those pesky Yithrilites, but it seems that was not the case. Pity. On the plus side, this just means we'll get more of these gameplay examples to look forward to!

about the sunday night release thing, thats not for us "regular people," right? because we all got our hands on the beta when we preordered, this is only  for the 'official beta testers' or something, correct?

very nice, i love knowing that numbers aren't everything.  this is what true strategy is about, being able to win no matter the odds, as long as you have the right strategy.

Yes maybe it would be good to first train the dragon on neutral mobs before sending him in front line, seems to be too valuable to sacrifice him like that.

And looking at all this seems that archers are very important in the strategy, i wouldnt go on war without a pack of them somewhere(preferably on a big hill) to support my troups.

(and sorry the the poor language, french man here <_< )

Oh man, that was brilliant. Really getting late here though. Tomorrow is work, so I'll have to wait another 22 hours to play. But I'll get through it.
