Elemental: Game Play Example – Part 6

Rise of the Paladins

image

The Order of the Paladin was the result of the miracle at Hinern. The mighty Crusaders, armed with the best Capitar could offer, had fallen almost instantly in battle while the Channeler, Roland alone had brought low the mighty Emperor of Yithril.

A whole sale movement towards equipping soldiers with magical equipment had thus grown to fruition with the Order of the Paladin being the result.

The 23rd year of Roland’s reign..

image The Empire of Yithril had constructed Hinern in such a way to bottle up the fledgling Kingdom of Capitar [AI note: That’s right, the shape of your city does have strategic importance and the AI does and will make use of that].

The known world

… Time

Passes…

image Roland’s second daughter, Kalypso had grown up.

imageAnd a powerful sorceress she would become.

imageResolve had also grown.

A break down of how it is researching so much

A Dance with Dragons

image So powerful had Roland’s daughter become that it was said that even the mighty dragons preferred her company.

But in truth, Roland, having mastered the art of diplomacy, had put great effort into seeking out and gaining the trust of the legendary creatures.

image [Developer’s note: We have since tweaked the defense of dragons to be somewhat higher]

Dragons are immensely powerful but one little known fact about them, they are expensive to keep fed. Over 6 gildars a month was spent feeding them.

And so it was with dragons and other creatures of might that Kalypso, the most powerful Channeler of her generation, marched to war to deal with the menace of Yithril once and for all.

You can see a quick video of the dragon and Kalypso approaching here:

And the battle:

imageOnly Kalypso would survive the battle.

“Perhaps,” Roland said to his daughter, “If we cannot defeat them on the battle field, we can starve them out.”

What about limited shots per battle (based on unit type/characteristics) for archer units, like in HOMM?  And/or limited unit range (or penalty at longer range, like in H3)?  These are simple ways of keeping archer types from being overwhelmingly more powerful than melee units.  Melee units must have advantages, after all, every army in history has had some melee/short-range soldiers.

Best regards,
Steven.

That snaking city is horribly ugly! Why haven't the kingdom's borders expanded in a more even manner? The city limits and kingdom's borders shouldn't be the same in such a large city, right?

It was built to strategically lock out portions of the map from other factions.  These aren't CIV style cities that grow in pre-determined blocks, you build them as you want within the area of control. It gives them, in my opinion, a much more natural flow as opposed to everything being a square.  Good news though, if you like them square you can build them square :)

You should read up about the Battle of Agincourt sometime ;) The French outnumbered the English almost 6 to 1, but armed with the Longbow, the English wiped out the French. All depends on positioning.

However in the context of a game I do agree with you somewhat. But like Frogboy says, if walk into battle with the "wrong" troops then why shouldn't you suffer if the other side has an extreme tactical advantage?

I love this AAR, but it has been discontinued. The problem is, that there is no other long & exciting AAR in the forum. All of them are short and just discontinued quickly
