Make a list of your strategy (RTS, 4X, etc) experience here.

Make a list of your strategy (RTS, 4X, etc) experience here.

  • Command and Conquer: Tiberium Dawn (Gold Edition)
  • Command and Conquer: Red Alert/Counterstrike/Aftermath (cruisers and Tanya!) (Modem play until 4am!)
  • Starcraft/Starcraft: Brood War (Didn't played it like the previous ones because... well... I can cheat and got lazy)
  • KKnD (Donwloaded the demo, it was fun.)
  • Age of Empires with Roman Expansion?(I liked it but still, with the cheats, I cheat and got bored. Ahehehe)
  • Dune 2000 (Played breifly because my computer sucked)
  • Serf/Settlers(Yes... it's the DOS version. I also liked it because it's kinda fresh from me. Not too militarisitc)
  • Homeworld (Demo Version. The graphics and the music... OMG and the Z-axis! and Zoom!)
  • Homeworld: Cataclysm (same reason as above)
  • Space Empires III (My first 4x)
  • Civilization II: Test of Time (Yey immunity chip!)
  • Populous III (I liked it because I feel like I'm a god)
  • Command and Conquer: Tiberium Sun/Firestorm (I don't like building off 2 items just to get one defensive structure. I think it's a waste of time)
  • Submarine Titans (Just liked the ai, made me watch and uninstalled)
  • Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2/Yuri's Revenge (Haha! Yuri...)
  • Rise of Nations (RTS and Civ! Loved it but slow on my computer. Aww...)
  • Majesty (Nice twist. You can't control your units. I really like this game.)
  • Civilization 3 (Because I like being a Roman)
  • Homeworld 2 (Played it for a brief time because the campaign is really hard, about 3 months. Didn't like the soundtrack)
  • Command and Conquer: Generals/Zero Hour (look the at the raptors fly! Really liked the plane trail graphics)
  • Warcraft III/Frozen Throne (I tried not to cheat and really liked it. Really liked the Hero addition to the units)
  • Command and Conquer: Tiberium Wars/Wrath of Kane (Not as fun as they were supposed to be)
  • Sins of a Solar Empire (3D space RTS with 4X... you've got to love it! It's homeworld, command and craft and civ)

Games I wish I had played:

Impossible Creatures
Space Empires V

SMAC/AX <-- what's does it stand for? Sorry about for not knowing.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri + Alien Crossfire

Rather than copy paste Terraziel list plus a good chuck of console/handheld strategy games I'll just say that his list pretty much applies to me as well.

Personal favourites would included Dark Reign, Imperium Galactica 2, Red Alert and Civilization 2.

I on the other hand am a relatively new gamer =)

And since we are talking Strategy, I'll stick to my limited experience there.

Total Annihilation
My first ever RTS. I liked it, but I was young. I couldn't micro very well, and I lost alot online. Mainly played campaign.

Alpha Centauri
I bought this game thinking it was some kind of shooter. I dunno. I was young then, probably 14 or 15, and bought the first thing I saw when I saved up enough money to buy a new PC game. I loved it. I loved the diplomacy, etc.

Then I fell into FPS for a long while.
Flash forward to Christmas of 2006.

Sword of the Stars

My uncle gave me this game because he said I watch the SciFi channel alot. So I fired it up that night, and I was lost. I lol'd to myself and put it up for a few months. After finally giving it another chance, I actually enjoyed it.

Company of Heroes /w Expansion
Fun, but.. I just lost interest after awhile. Online was the bread & butter, and I was turned into butter everytime. Alot of micro, and am just not into micro-management so much.

C&C 3
Alot of hype. Bought it. Hated it. Campaign was so-so, but the Multiplayer is completely ridiculous. Let's see who can spam the most t1 tanks as fast as possible.

Fell back into FPS games, via BF2, TF2, CS:S (wow.. what a weird coincidence, these are all sequels heh. Anything original? lol)

Supreme Commander /w Expansion
A co-worker convinced me to get this. I like it. Once again, quite a bit of micro. Mainly all about rushing and spamming.

Sins of a Solar Empire
Same co-worker convinced me to buy this. He stopped playing it because he felt it was too deep, and went back to his xbox. I was the other way, I wanted more. The diplomacy felt shallow. The graphics were nice, but that's not what makes a game for me. I think the replayability is a bit low as well... Online seems to be quite a bit of spam spam spam. That's the problem imho with all of these online strategy games. It's all about spammy spam spam spammity spam spam spam. Sick of it.

I was sucked back into Space games. I launched Sword of the Stars and wanted more. More more more. And this is how I found the GC2 forums. **note. Just a funny side-note. It said a blend of 4X and RTS. I seriously asked myself "what the hell is a 4X game" and had to google it lol

Galactic Civilizations 2 /w Expansions
Will let you know =) Purchasing it now hehe. Played the demo for 2 days and love it.

Space empires 5 is great but sketchy if you don't like TBS.

I recommend star wars empire at war (great space battles) and and some total war games. Also, wait for dawn of war 2... and starcraft 2... and spore... and fable 2...

I'm not going to list all my games... but...my first dive into RTS was command and conquer on the orginal PS1.
What really hooked me on RTS was the Civilization games, I love civ4 and all its expansions, also rise of nations is good, so is empire earth 2 & 3 I still play them, although I do enjoy soase.
I have a lot of games that are listed here, some I've played for hours, some I've just dabbled. I do think I need to try Galciv2
Reply #34 Top
The list is too long so I will only the list the few that I play regularly in the last year:

Company of Heroes (vCOH)
Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts (COH:OF)
Sins of a Solar Empire

The Total War games (Medieval, Viking Invastion, Rome, Medieval 2, etc.) are good as well but you need the realism mod's to make them worthwhile strategy games. Otherwise they are too easy.

The Sid Meir Alpha Centauri/Alien Crossfire are great games that I reinstall every once in a while.

LOL for the guys who mentioned the original Populous!

And for something different, a great strategy board game that was reimplemented in Java is an old Avalon Hill classis called Titan. The open source, free, java clone is called Colossus and can be found here: http://colossus.sourceforge.net/ . Well worth the time to check it out.

Enjoy.

Taken from the strategy games list on wikipedia and filtered (so I may have missed a couple that I personally wouldnt count as strategy games), and yes i have played them all, rather depressingly.

Wait, Terraziel, you played Disciples III and Majesty 2?

Can I use your time machine when you're done with it?!

;p

you missed dawn of war 2, and C&C red alert 3. Its what I get for not paying enough attention to the lists of sequels.

Though as an aside i have to say this list has made me wonder what peoples lists are like for other genres as well, because i could probably get a list like that for most genres (except sports games, the last sport game I played, and enjoyed, was Mutant League Football on the megadrive).

You're right--I did miss those.

Hm. Well, I have a pretty long list for RPGs (I've played most of the good ones going back to the days of Wasteland and the SSI Gold Box series), a smaller list of adventure games (a few of the old-school Sierra games), a still smaller list for simulations (although just as old--I played and loved MicroProse's adaptation of Tom Clancy's Red Storm Rising and the original Elite), and an even smaller list of FPS games, which I actually think is probably a much younger genre than many of the others simply by virtue of its requirements for a somewhat sophisticated level of graphics technology.

My games!

Most fun ones:
Battle for Middle Earth (simple, fun, easy to learn and play game)
Sins of a Solar Empire (If I didn't like it, would I be here?)
Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne (Not the actual game, but the map-making community is quite helpful and nice) (Hate DOTA)

Others:
Battle for Middle Earth II (Never really captured my appeal)
Rise of Legends (Would not even work on my computer)
Medieval II, Total War (Worked slowly on my computer) (On a side note, 512 mb RAM with a Vista computer is not happy)
Rise of Nations (Meh, kind of fun)
Age of Mythology and expansion (Was rather fun for me, but xp ate up my ram)
Warcraft 3 (Did not at the time have the community the expansion does)

That's pretty much it. Quite fun games.

Oh, and one more. There was an old rts game for the ps2. It was called Aliens vs Predator: Extinction and was a somewhat fun game, but was burned because of no skirmish mode.

Rise of Legends (Would not even work on my computer)

That's a bummer. I love RoL--it's the reason I'm putting off buying GCII:ToA. I wonder if the computer issues are the reason it got shafted by the gaming magazines' ratings.

No, the reasons it did poorly overall, was firstly the campaign and story were god-awful and actually a step back from the RoN campaign, the cuotl were grotesquely unbalanced, and the main one was major multiplayer issues which prevented it from 'getting off the ground' so to speak, but even then most of the reviews at the time were much more forgiving than I would have been.

Maybe the 512 mb ram on Vista was the reason... I might try it again. It should be somewhere in my closet... ever since I got my 2 gigs, I have been running my games much better. I even tried City of Villains and EVE, though EVE is hard.

My list is too long!

I started Strategy gaming in 1984 with Imperium Galactum (for the Atari, not the Commie 64).

Gah, I'm old. ;)

Almost certainly, I'm amazed Anything ran with 512 on Vista, including Vista itself

Would you recommend Dawn of War to a CnC fan but will get bored if there's a cheat? Is the story line any good?

I would say DoW is much better than C&C3,especially with the race mods + Soulstorm. Each race in that game is very different from each other. The gameplay is awesome too.

In terms of story line,it suxs but it truely shines in skirmish with the AI Mod.DoW's AI Mod has the best AI i ever seen.It makes Sins one feels like rubbish now.

Anyway,back to topic,my list.It follows chronologically.
-Dune 2(My first RTS,was an idiot that time.Completely clueless in that game)
-C&C(Second RTS,still an idiot.Still clueless)
-Warcraft 1(know how to play a bit)
-Warcraft 2 and it's expansion(didnt play much)
-Red Alert 1
-Starcraft(The first game that i actually play properly.Really enjoy that)
-KKND(love that spam fest game)
-C&C:Tiberium Sun(one of the best C&C,IMO)
-Red Alert 2(another great game in the C&C series)
-Dune 2000(utter crap)
-Emperor:Battle for Dune(pretty decent game)
-Battle Realms(one of the best game i ever played)
-Mech Commander(it rocks too)
-Warcraft 3(didnt really like it)
-C&C Generals(Ugh...)
-Perimeter(didnt play much too)
-Ground Control 2(decent game, crappy ai spoil the whole game)
-Dawn of War(the best game i ever play so far)
-Supreme Commander(rig cant take it,this game crashed my old rig)
-Company of Heroes(decent, due to lack of DoW's melee violence)
-C&C Tiberium Wars(Ugh...)
-World in Conflict(didnt like it)
-Universe of War(decent game but console interface and design spoil it)
-Sins of Solar Empire(one of the best and innovative game i ever play, need better ai)

These are the ones that I own and have either completed (if there was one central campaign) or played enough to be very familiar with them.

Age of Empires / Rise of Rome
Age of Empires 2 / The Conquerors
Age of Empires 3
Age of Mythology
Black & White
C&C
C&C 2 / Firestorm
C&C 3 / Kane's Wrath
C&C Red Alert / Counterstrike / Aftermath
C&C Red Alert 2 / Yuri's Revenge
Civilization 2
Civilization 3
Civilization 4 / Warlords / Beyond the Sword
Colonization
Dune II
Dune 2000
Heroes of Might and Magic 2
Heroes of Might and Magic 3
Heroes of Might and Magic 4
Pikmin
Populous: The Beginning (3)
Settlers II
Sins of a Solar Empire
Star Wars: Force Commander
Star Wars: Rebellion
Starcraft / Brood Wars
Warcraft 2
Warcraft 3 / Frozen Throne

Probably a few more as well, but these are all I can think of at the moment.

Although many (but definitely not all) of these are fantastic games, my favourites are probably Red Alert, Civ2 and Age of Empires 2. I have also found myself playing a lot of Civ4 since it's release three years ago. The expansions were good as well. I guess I can count it among my favourite strategy games by now.

SoaSE is definitely a great game with potential to become a favourite, but it is too soon to say.

By the way, if we are including city building/management-sims to these lists (like some people have), I must add:

Theme Park, Theme Hospital, Sim City, Sim City 2000, Sim City 3000, Rollercoaster Tychoon, Rollercoaster Tychoon 3, Pizza Tychoon, Railroad Tychoon, Caesar 2, Sim Tower, Tropico, Afterlife... and probably a whole lot of games I have forgotten.
Out of these, my favourites are Theme Park, Theme Hospital, Sim City 2000 and Pizza Tychoon.
