Make a list of your strategy (RTS, 4X, etc) experience here.

  • Command and Conquer: Tiberium Dawn (Gold Edition)
  • Command and Conquer: Red Alert/Counterstrike/Aftermath (cruisers and Tanya!) (Modem play until 4am!)
  • Starcraft/Starcraft: Brood War (Didn't played it like the previous ones because... well... I can cheat and got lazy)
  • KKnD (Donwloaded the demo, it was fun.)
  • Age of Empires with Roman Expansion?(I liked it but still, with the cheats, I cheat and got bored. Ahehehe)
  • Dune 2000 (Played breifly because my computer sucked)
  • Serf/Settlers(Yes... it's the DOS version. I also liked it because it's kinda fresh from me. Not too militarisitc)
  • Homeworld (Demo Version. The graphics and the music... OMG and the Z-axis! and Zoom!)
  • Homeworld: Cataclysm (same reason as above)
  • Space Empires III (My first 4x)
  • Civilization II: Test of Time (Yey immunity chip!)
  • Populous III (I liked it because I feel like I'm a god)
  • Command and Conquer: Tiberium Sun/Firestorm (I don't like building off 2 items just to get one defensive structure. I think it's a waste of time)
  • Submarine Titans (Just liked the ai, made me watch and uninstalled)
  • Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2/Yuri's Revenge (Haha! Yuri...)
  • Rise of Nations (RTS and Civ! Loved it but slow on my computer. Aww...)
  • Majesty (Nice twist. You can't control your units. I really like this game.)
  • Civilization 3 (Because I like being a Roman)
  • Homeworld 2 (Played it for a brief time because the campaign is really hard, about 3 months. Didn't like the soundtrack)
  • Command and Conquer: Generals/Zero Hour (look the at the raptors fly! Really liked the plane trail graphics)
  • Warcraft III/Frozen Throne (I tried not to cheat and really liked it. Really liked the Hero addition to the units)
  • Command and Conquer: Tiberium Wars/Wrath of Kane (Not as fun as they were supposed to be)
  • Sins of a Solar Empire (3D space RTS with 4X... you've got to love it! It's homeworld, command and craft and civ)

Games I wish I had played:

Impossible Creatures
Space Empires V

In no particular order:

Dune 2
(My first real time strategy game, and one I thouroughly enjoyed though I only ever completed the campaign once as the Harkonan)
K240
(another real time strategy game set in space in an asteroid field where you had to colonise the asteroids, mine them for resources, build ships and/or missiles to wipe out the aliens who were trying to do the same to you)
Colonization
(turn based strategy game set around the European conquest of the new world. Build your nation from very little; trade with your home country, the other European powers or the natives; then fight for your independence. Cracking game and one of the best I've ever played)
Civilization
(the daddy of turn based strategy games which should need no explanation)
Civilization II
(the sequel which in my opinion, improved on the original)
Command and Conquer
(again needs no introduction, but wasn't a game I was ever that keen on for some reason)
Dawn of War
Dawn of War: Winter Assault
Dawn of War: Dark Crusade
(a cracking real time strategy game and two of it's expansions)
Warcraft
(tried playing for a while, but got bored to be honest)
Civilisation: A Call To Power
(turn based again, and one I enjoyed. Whilst I could get it to work anyway....)

There are more, but I can't recall them at the moment.

Strat games I have owned

C&C Generals (Good game but buggy netcode that had trouble coping with NATS and unltimatly it seems to have killed online since when I go back to it MP is pretty empty......also 100% rush orientated which I dont like as at that level its a matter of quickest button bash with the first few units)

Civ4+ all expansions (I know I will maybe take a telling of for this lol but I bought it and havent played much at all, it does seem good but I dont like the war side of it.......I havent played with the latest expansions what art of war or something but unless it makes war better cant see me going back to it)

Medevial 2:total war: I love this game , I like to get up close an personal with my battles, only thing I didnt like was they marketted it MP which I bought so I could play campaign mode in MP but the MP is a joke, no campaign mode)

Supreme commander : good game I guess but I cant really say as I am not to good online , and it kind of is all about rush tactics to the first resources. What I will say is the multiplayer setup i.e the lobby and ladders was done very very well.

Stronghold+ stronghold warchest: lol this is probably one of the first strats I got into on the PC and Its really good :) I just took to this game

Anno1701 : bought it for MP and I dont know if a patch is out but the way it worked only germans could play on the most recent version, another really shortsited way of doing things which stopped me playing

IMperium galactica 2: Have got this but still to play , I did a shortsighted thing, looked @ graphics and put it down but I will definatly learn to play one day!

Black and white 1 and 2: Black and white 1 I loved and the MP play was brilliant as well but the fact it was P2P let it down badly, bought B&W 2 and hate it owing to no MP which was a massive appeal to replay value of BW 1

Age of Empires III warchiefs : Bought this and like it :) havent played it for too long though . I will need to get into it again :) Almost forgot about this one!

Age Of Empires II-> Excellent
Empire Earth 2 (with the expansion pack)-> It's OK..
Homeworld 2 (too difficult)-> Incredible (and incredibly difficult)
Galactic Civilizations 2 (with the expansion)-> The best after sins!!
Civilization 4 (with the two expansions packs)-> Good
Sins-> My prefered one!!

Note that i tried AOE 3 and, well, it was so boring...

Starcraft FTW! The only one I've played more times than I can count. Man, I love that game. Say what you want about 'formulaic, lacks storyline' and I thumb my nose at you. :P

Homeworld: I spent so long trying to beat this game, it's not even funny. I even PAID MONEY for a strategy guide. Still got stuck on the thirteenth mission. But man, it sure was gorgeous - especially for when it came out. I remember trying to pry my jaw off the floor and failing miserably.

Homeworld Cataclysm: Decidedly easier than the original, I actually finished this one. Not quite as good music, but the interface was a bit easier to navigate. (This talk of Homeworld makes me want to use a couple of tokens from Total Gaming and get ORB, since people say it's similar, if not quite as engrossing.)

Total Annihilation: I've installed and tried to play this game at least a dozen times. BO-RING.

Red Alert: What a ridiculously fun game. German shepherds!

GalCivII, with expansions: my current strategy poison. Can't get enough of it.

DisciplesII: Pretty much my favorite fantasy TBS game ever. People talk about Age of Wonders and Master of Magic, but I spent a lot more time playing Disciples than those two put together.

Those aren't all I've played, just the ones that I actually spent enough time playing (or ones that I've beaten, with the exception of TA and Homeworld) to bother mentioning.

As soon as I get a new gaming rig (I'm in Europe and using an old laptop) I'm thinking Sins is in my future . . .

This list is just games I've owned and played a significant amount, no demos.

Grand Strategy (in no particular order):

Master of Magic
Civ 2
Civ 3 + expansions
Civ 4 + expansions
Ascendancy
Europa Universalis
Europa Universalis 2 (beats the tar out of Civ as a historical game, IMO)
Crusader Kings
Victoria & expansion
Hearts of Iron 2 Doomsday
Alpha Centauri
Gal Civ 2, DA, and TA (the undisputed king of turn based strat IMO)
Age of Wonders
Age of Wonders 2
AoW: Shadow Magic
Heroes of Might and Magic V
Rome Total War (usually with the Total Realism mod)
MoO 3 (not as bad as everyone says, but then I wasn't a big fan of MoO 2)
Sword of the Stars
Disciples 2 & expansions

RTS/RTT:

Herzog Zwei (the originator of the genre)
Warcraft
Warcraft 2 & expansion
Warcraft 3 & expansions
Starcraft & expansion
Dawn of War, Winter Assault, Dark Crusade, and Soulstorm
Rise of Nations & expansion (the undisputed king of RTS's IMO)
Close Combat 1 through 5
Majesty & Expansion
Sins of a Solar Empire (a dud IMO, but to each his own)
Age of Mythology (the most poorly balanced RTS I've ever played)
Homeworld 1 and 2
Conquest: Frontier Wars
Mech Commander 2
Every iteration of the Starfleet Command series (though 3 sucks)
The Tone Rebellion (neat little unknown game)

I'm sure I'm forgetting some older titles, and I've deliberately not listed city builders/sim games as I think they don't neatly fit the requested categories.

In the interests of full disclosure, please note that I've not necessarily played some of these strategy games a whole lot, but I've at least taken a crack at (and in most cases, have also owned) all the ones listed. Also note that I'm excluding any games for which I've only played the demo version (so I'm not going to list Dominions 3, Sins of a Solar Empire, etc.):

Herzog Zwei (the forefather of the modern RTS, playable only on the Sega Genesis)
Command & Conquer: Red Alert
Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2
Earth 2150
Star Wars: Rebellion
Star Wars: Empire at War
Master of Orion 3 (unfortunately)

nadirxyz just reminded me when he mentions gciv 2, lol cant BELIEVE I forgot to mention this! at least I think I did, I like it very much but requires alot of micro management. I got gciv2 + dark avator + dreadlords. I dont even think I have played all the expansions yet.

Wow! just noticed someone mentioned populous man that game was EPIC in its day, I LOVED it! Takes me back to an old game that involved strategy where it was like these people you had to control and they could have like flamethrowers and all kinds of weapon mods , cant remember the name, nothing like populous but was another great game of that day! Dont want to vere off topic since I love discussing all games but another game I liked was heimdall 2

Kay, here's my 'list'...

- Too many! In the past. ;)

- Must uninstall a few (duh- maybe even MORE) dead-woods from the G:/ drive asap to optimize regular scans & daunting long defragmentation tasks.

I never keep anything above three to five titles active for more than a few weeks or months. So, here's exactly what's left and thus, possibly worth my precious free_time every now and then;

a) GalCiv(s) & Expansions
b) AoE-RoR
c) cEvo (an excellent deterministic clone of Civilization-2/3, open source)
d) X-Coms: UFOD_TFTD_APOCALYPSE (in all their incredible DOS-Feeling gimmicks!!)
e) A whole bunch of emulated wonders from the TurboGraphX-16 era; Nectaris being just one. (Slick & efficient, fast & fun, swift load_play_enjoy_leave type of process)

f) DONE, over - i haven't got time for anything else if not, VERY rarely!

Good gods, where do you guys find the time to play all those?! :LOL:

My list: Sins of a Solar Empire

Yep, that's it. I'm totally new to this genre of games.
Reply #17 Top
Oh, and I went out and bought Gal Civ 2 (Gold Edition) and will pick up Twilight of the Arnor when it's released, since I'm so impressed with Stardock. (Apologies for the double post, but the edit button seems to be on hiatus).

Rise of Nations
Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots
Starcraft
Company of Heroes
Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds
World in Conflict
Hearts of Iron II
Sins of a Solar Empire

My personal favorite in this list: Rise of Nations: Thrones and Patriots

I saw Rise of Nations on a couple of lists, but it seems like it did not get the attention it deserves. Rise of Nations is a great game, I still play it multiplayer.
Reply #19 Top
so what's you favorite then? With that list, you should've at least one game you really liked? :)

Ones I played, in order

Shogun- first experience with EA (negative)
Disciples II
Civ III
SMAC/AX
Kohan. One of the most underrated games ever, just needed a bit more polish
EUII
Victoria- too much Micro
GalCiv I
Kohan II- utter garbage
MTW II- utter garbage
GC II
EU III
Civ IV

@Terraziel
so what's you favorite then? With that list, you should've at least one game you really liked? :)

@Enteralterego
Would you recommend Dawn of War to a CnC fan but will get bored if there's a cheat? Is the story line any good?

@DethAdder
Yeah.. uhm... could you filter out the non strategy games? :) thanks

@Zyxpsilon
You still have Age of Empires - Rise of Rome in your computer? Damn! That's an old game! I remember buying it and it was raining outside and it was soaking wet when I got home.

@SanChonino
Haha! German Shepards! Red Alert featured a dog as a unit! So funny! :) But hated the sound effect of the flame tower, even the sprite. I wish it was more like the sound effect and sprite used in Command and Conquer.

@Vinraith
Herzog Zwei (the originator of the genre)
The Tone Rebellion (neat little unknown game)

hmm... interesting... are they still selling this? I know I should've googled it but hey... I'm lazy. Ahehehe.

@SetarcosNous
Populous <--- the orginal! Damn! I could understand how that game play works!

@Martok
Herzog Zwei (the forefather of the modern RTS, playable only on the Sega Genesis)

Answered my question at the top. thanks.! Sega Genesis? Waaa! Emulator mode...

@Augustinian
turn based is also included. :)

@Coelocanth
I also ask that question. ahehehe... sometimes I cheat so that I could finish the game immediately so that I go back studying/working.

@Hynkel
I really liked how Rise of Nations combined the Civ factor into it's gameplay. But I don't like it's diplomacy factor. I dunno why... and when I got one, my computer is a slow ass so I wasn't able to enjoy it fully.

@arstal
SMAC/AX <-- what's does it stand for? Sorry about for not knowing.

Maybe I'm a bit Old.

Agree with a lot of these lists, but there's one missing. An old Amiga game.

Deuteros, the sequel to Millennium 2.2, which I sadly never got a chance to play.

Deuteros is one of the truly great and inventive strategy games ever made.

My favourite? The Tone Rebellion, still playing it after a decade, there is just nothing like it in both gameplay and art direction, and I'm not sure there should be.

Other games of note:

Civilisation 4 (Plus expansions)
Company Of Heroes
Imperium Galactica 2

EDIT:

ah, Deuteros, I remember that, God it seemed so complicated at the time.
