(I read the entire bug thread, this wasn't mentioned that I could see)
Is the multimedia module really optional? If it's required nevermind this, as I'm still downloading that part. If it is optional, however, why is this happening: When I start the program (version 1.03A.057) it gets to the main menu screen with some panel where the "start game", etc buttons should be, and my computer freezes hard (no response to mouse clicks, no alt-tab, no ctrl-alt-del, no response to soft-shutdown) and I have to cut the power to my machine to get out and do a cold boot. If I rename or delete these files (in galciv\Setup\ ) :
Menu_Open.bik
Menu_Starbase01.bik
Menu_Starbase02.bik
I see the "start game", etc buttons, but there's no response to my mouse clicks and the keyboard doesn't seem to have an effect, but I can alt-tab out and alt-F4 the program or ctrl-alt-del it. I tried it in windowed mode too and let it sit for a while to see if it was waiting a certain length of time for the non-existant intro-movie to play, but it didn't respond any differently after quite a while (I let it sit while I read this thread).
I was running directX 8.1 or something at first, so I installed 9.0a before I ran the aforementioned while-reading-this-thread test, no difference. I'm running Win98 on a ~1.3GHz AMD with 256MB of memory, and a GEForce2 video card with the proper drivers.
The multimedia download is at 187MB/366MB, so I guess I'll see in the morning if it makes any difference.
In any case, thanks for any assistance you can offer, and/or for putting up with this if it's just a matter of not having the mm module.
