Bug Report Thread

For users who have version 1.02.49 (stand alone or from SDC) please post any problems you think are bugs here.

Note: A feature you wish the game had or a change in game play is not a bug. ;)

(:( 1.03A saves sometimes crashes to desktop. I was getting really nasty system crashes (auto reboot), but that could've been a memory problem. The crashes to desktop are the game's doings. I don't have any other program that crashes my system at all. I have all the newest drivers, bios, etc... Game saves are wonky sometimes as well, or perhaps the root of all the problems I've had. Today I loaded a saved game and it showed no entries on the screen displays, then crashed to desktop when I tried to access the ingame menu. The previous save was OK. Something about GC file handling is not working on all thrusters.

re: #522

Sorry. Meant to say, permanent lose of Research rating is a serious issue when it happens.

Invading a Planet causes the game to lock up.

When you anticipate the prompt "Hit Space Bar to invade"
and press quickly. The game intermittantly locks up.

I report this bug twice I have had it happened in every Beta and released version.

Could be the thread is listening for a input before the dialog can accept the input ?

I can not beleive nobody else has seen this ?

When I tell a survey ship to auto survey it just sits there and doesn't move. Seems to do it on the bigger galaxy settings only. Using version 1.03A.057.

Actually it works after I end a turn. Annoying but not a huge problem.

CorranH96,

That is most likely because when you gave the Auto-Survey, there were no anomalies known at that time. During other ship movements, an anomaly was uncovered, and the survey ship then took off for it.

Version 1.03A.057

On resuming my latest game (on loading of saved game), my ally goes to war. However, my empire is still not being forced into war with the empire my ally is at war with. Neither is my ally asking for me to declare war.

(I read the entire bug thread, this wasn't mentioned that I could see)

Is the multimedia module really optional? If it's required nevermind this, as I'm still downloading that part. If it is optional, however, why is this happening: When I start the program (version 1.03A.057) it gets to the main menu screen with some panel where the "start game", etc buttons should be, and my computer freezes hard (no response to mouse clicks, no alt-tab, no ctrl-alt-del, no response to soft-shutdown) and I have to cut the power to my machine to get out and do a cold boot. If I rename or delete these files (in galciv\Setup\ ) :

Menu_Open.bik
Menu_Starbase01.bik
Menu_Starbase02.bik

I see the "start game", etc buttons, but there's no response to my mouse clicks and the keyboard doesn't seem to have an effect, but I can alt-tab out and alt-F4 the program or ctrl-alt-del it. I tried it in windowed mode too and let it sit for a while to see if it was waiting a certain length of time for the non-existant intro-movie to play, but it didn't respond any differently after quite a while (I let it sit while I read this thread).

I was running directX 8.1 or something at first, so I installed 9.0a before I ran the aforementioned while-reading-this-thread test, no difference. I'm running Win98 on a ~1.3GHz AMD with 256MB of memory, and a GEForce2 video card with the proper drivers.

The multimedia download is at 187MB/366MB, so I guess I'll see in the morning if it makes any difference.

In any case, thanks for any assistance you can offer, and/or for putting up with this if it's just a matter of not having the mm module.

Getting crash whenever I click on the next button for a vote on either going to war, or changing government. Only time does not happen is when I immediately change gov't after it is researched.

Forgot to add that I am running the latest 1.03A standalone update. Was getting this same crash on the Stardock version before that. Game crashes to desktop (running XP, with latest drivers and DirectX)

(update to #534)

Well, the mm download finished faster than I thought it would, so I tried the "whole" thing out... same result, it either hangs on a .bik (the intro, for example), or brings up a completely unresponsive main menu screen if I've disabled all the .biks before that screen. The debug.err file always ends (as it did before) on the line:

Debug Message: Begin playing intro movie.

Is there anything I can do about this? This computer has previously played .bik movies just fine (at least I think Age of Wonders 2 used .biks), but now it just seems to loathe them.

Thanks in advance... the game looks like it's really fun, the main menu just won't let me play ;)

Missing resource bug: a resource disappeared from my map. My constructors are on their way there in the save game but the resource is gone. I have an auto-save where the resource is still present. Mail me at [email protected] for the save games.

Version: 1.03A.057
Date: 5/19/03

This isn't a complaint, rather a congratulations. Ever since I've played with the 1.03A version of the program, all bugs save one (the music will stop suddenly and won't start again unless the game is reloaded) have disappeared. My latest game (played on a gigantic map) had no issues at all.

Bravo to Stardock!

Don't think this has been reported already - a bug when renaming ships...

It doesn't seem to be possible to rename a ship that is in orbit of a planet, you have to launch it first then rename it. Although you can select the ship in orbit so that its information is displayed in the bottom status area, clicking to rename it always goes to rename the last ship that was selected out of orbit, if that makes sense.

I'm playing the latest version (1.03.whateverthedownloadis). Although the overall game is reasonably stable, I've had a couple of
persistent issues. I'm running Windows XP on a 2 GHz Mobile P4 with 512 megs of RAM.

I get a blank template (e.g. "test text here" on the diplomacy screen) and a subsequent crash to the desktop from some save games; I have one of these games if it would be useful.

An odd feature also occurs in the list of things built. In some cases the list of ships, projects, etc. vanishes and is replaced by bucolic country scenes.

Send email to pinsonneaultdotoneatosudotedu, replacing the dot with a ., the one with a 1, and the at with an @. (Yea, I hate spam).

Sorry if someone has said this before as I don't read this thread, but I found a few bugs this weekend. I think the rest are already known, but not sure about this one.

I had a freighter that left Planet X to go to Planet Y. Part way to Planet Y, Planet X (my planet) defected and joined Empire Y. Then my ship arrived at Planet Y, and I got credit for a trade route between Planet X and Y, even though I didn't hold Planet X anymore.

The key here seems to be I owned Planet X when the freighter was sent out, but lost control BEFORE it arrived. If I lost the planet after it arrived it would have been cleared. I've seen that work before.

Hello, on V1.03 I have noticed a few things that are just not right. I am not sure if you are aware of them or not, but I figured it was worth posting...

In the Relations screen, the description of each race uses the default names and alignments to describe them rather than taking into account the changes the player made in the galaxy setup screens.

The Military ending starts out with an explanation of We Have Conqured the Galaxy, but then the rest of the overview describes a social victory, not a military one.

I also noticed that when loading a game, whether or not you are at war, it tells you that you are not. This could be a real problem if you are loading a game from a while ago and forgot you were at war when saving…

Ian.

A pretty annoying bug that is probably already reported:

Basic steps are:
1) selecting a technology to research
2) Discover that technology in the diplomacy screen vai some sort of trade
3) You are never prompted to select a new technology/ research isn't accumulated.

so about 8 turns or so go by I start feeling like, hey I should have a new tech here pretty soon... go to the research screen and the first item in list is selected, but I've accumulated no research towards it.

Kalador, If you still have the save game I'd like to take a look at it.

Jusjoly, do you have the UP resolution in effect that protects freighters?

Fifthmist, I'm having trouble nailing down exactly where the crash happened, as the addresses in the report are off.  Do you have a save game where you can reproduce this? If so, please e-mail it to me along with your data folder so that I can get your mods. :)

If anyone hasn't sent me a save game before, I need both the .sav file and the corresponding folder.

re: #533 - Ally goes to war, my empire doesn't.

12 turns later, my "Congress" notified me we had to go to war. The next turn, my Ally notified me that they would honor me being at war with (their enemy). Humm... either they made peace on the turn I went to war or was this an extraneous message from my ally?

Cari,
I don't believe I had that particular resolution passed at the time where my freighter being shot down caused the system to freeze. Prior to losing this particular freighter I had lost a few others but every so often it seems to freeze with the end turn button showing that it's still processing the turn.
