Sins Beta 2 - Technical Feedback - *Post Here*

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 2.

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 2 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, please install SmartException from the Free Stuff section of Stardock Central and reproduce it (if possible). Send the generated exception to: sinsbugs(at)stardock(dot)net along with a detailed description as outlined above. If Sins generates its own crash report, please follow the instructions on the dialog that pops-up (if you send in a Sins-generated report, you don't need to send in a SmartException one).

If you wish to give us non-technical feedback about Beta 2 (feature requests, gameplay suggestions, etc.), please post it here:

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/index.aspx?AID=155665

By keeping this information separate, it will go a long way towards us making Sins a better game!

Thanks!

I can't find any announcements vis a vis 64-bit support. Will a 64-bit version of this game ship?
no 64bit support, but it will run on a bit machine

Is their a debug.err file that could be used for this game like Galactic Civ. 2? That would make things easy for posting system specs. Anyway, I had a bug where the ships were in icon mode (when you zoom out and the ships appear as icons), and no matter how closely you zoomed in, they still remained as icons. Also, a computer ship would follow my screen no matter how I scrolled, and as later on, all of my icon ships would appear to travel through the planets rather than around them as they should. Anyone else experience this?

Other than that, the game was working very well. I have yet to have any kind of hard crash in the game where you have to reset your computer.

Good grief, I should hope not! Windows has come a long way since 95 / 2000, where those types of errors where so common as to lead to such monikers as "blue screen of death!!!!" and my families favorite the "windows wheel of mis-fortune" (where bankruptcy = working computer ).

That said, are you using an up-to-date copy of the game?

i have noticed that some times the ai dosent get all the planets they can. my ally had 4 planets about 1-2 hours into the game but there was a terran planet right next to his home would nice and behind so no 1 could attack it and it had an artefact on it and still 5 hours into the game he hasent taken it which is annoying cos i have a artefact pact and i want that 1. and all the planets pirates had been killed by te ai but he dosent seem to want to take it for some unknown reason.

I lost one of my worlds, and since I immediately lost vision of it, it still showed up as owned by me (as in owned by Stratteggi; last observed 700 seconds ago).

Also, ships need to stop prioritizing siege ships when at an enemy world. I was attacking an enemy, and my ships wanted to kill the Pirate Pillagers above all else, even though they were doing my job for me.

Hi, I just joined the Beta on 7/31. I have not gotten to far into the game, but right now am having a problem with my ships not attacking pirates or anything else for that matter. They won't fire on the pirates either automatically or manually. I saw in the list of fixes that this problem had been taken care of, but I seem to still be having it. The Sins version is 0.76[b].018. System info follows:

Windows XP Professional
2 GB mem
2.8 Ghz
DirectX 9.0c
GeForce 7800 GS

Thanks.

This is a known bug -- you have to restart the game after you play through the tutorial for certain modified game parameters to get reset.

Thanks Ron. I took your hint and it worked.

Thanks!

Hint? The only hint here is the one I should PM to the devs about a "known bugs and issues" thread, complete with a (bulleted) list of known, fixed, and "working as intended" (AKA: Culture) bugs.

Ok this is getting ridiculous I know this had been mentioned before but just started playing with the autosave function enabled by default playing 5 stars 100 planets game that isn't over and have 4.06GB uncompressed 1.48GB compressed of save games this seems a bit much for the saved games from one game then again it doesn't over write and the last few saves are 100+mb.

Just to point out, but ATM both compressing and handling save games is a "low" priority. They are currently sized the way they are to make them human-readable, for example. This is a beta, not a final game, yada yada yada... The devs know and have responded to your exact question Just clean out your saves from time to time (documents and settings \ your name \ application data \ ironclad games, IIRC)...

You don't even need to find the directory, you can erase save games from within Sins.

I knew about the save games being huge just think the autosave needs to be changed don't need 55 autosaves from one game.

Yeah, but there you have to do it one-by-one, if you go to the directory shift and two clicks gets 'em all!

Depends on how far back you need to go to track a given bug, once you've found it. Pretty much not relevant anymore, from what I can see, but who knows when you'll find that kind of bug...

But to get to the directory you'd need more clicks, whereas you are going to be in the Sins load menu anyway. I guess it's really a tradeoff based on how many autosaves you have.

True -- since I can easily wrack up 20-30 (or more, probably lots more, I don't count) saves in a single play session, I save a fair bit of clicks doing it that way.

Here are a couple of issues I've been noticing.

8800GTS
Intel E6600 Dual Core
Asus P5B MB
LG WA 226 Widescreen LCD

1. Solar Lens/Flare sometimes doesn't seem to be pointing in the right direction (which should be in 'my' general direction. Sometimes the flare effect points off to the side and remains stationary as I pan around.

2. Sometimes, when I order my ships to move around slightly within a gravity well, they will try to jump to the next gravity well over, and then back again to reach the spot I clicked on. This only happens when I am zoomed out a little ways from the gravity well. If I zoom in closer and give the same order, the ships will properly go to the spot I clicked on (without the long multi-gravity well detour).

*A lot of us have Dual Core Processors. Is there any chance you guys will include some Dual Core support along with that future patch for DirectX 10 support I've read about?

Thank you for everything guys. Sins is going to be a big hit.

I'm certainly hoping they go ahead and utilize both cores fully! But I doubt its going to happen just yet...

As far as DX10 graphics go, where'd you hear about that?!
Its been said that they are looking into dual core support

Paradoxnt i think you might have misunderstood something as they have said no DX10 for the game, maybe in an expansion or Sins 2.
Dual-core support is not present, but may be added later if we think it's needed for additional performance (by later I mean before release or likely not at all). DirectX10 support is very iffy as there aren't many gamers using Vista yet or those with DX10 hardware. We may look into supporting DX10 via a patch after release, but it's too soon to say one way or the other.

Thanks Yarlen.

Truthfully, DirectX 10 won't really help me as I am planing on delaying my 'upgrade' to Vista for as long as possible.

Still, Dual Core support would be helpful to even those of us who hate Vista.
