Fences 6.0 Release Feedback

With the Fences 6.0 release today, we are creating this thread so that users can report any observed issues.

Obtaining the product

Object Desktop members can get the release from within Object Desktop Manager

Individual purchases (as well as Object Desktop Members) can also be obtained from your account page: https://store.stardock.com/myaccount/products

Reporting an issue

Please include the following for anything found:

Exact Windows version \ build (winver.exe)
Detailed steps to recreate the issue seen
Screenshots and videos are very helpful. Videos can be uploaded to a cloud drive service (GoogleDrive, DropBox, OneDrive, YouTube), with a shared link included in your post. Images can be copied and pasted directly into a post.
If there are specific apps that the app does not work (well) with, please note what apps and their exact versions. If any app is not common, a link to a trial version would be appreciated.

Fences and wallpaper turn black, randomly, as with almost all other version of fences, as reported numerous times by a lot of users all over the internet, in the forums on reddit etc.

Uninstalled reinstalled - same behavior.

Tried other version on different pcs - same behaviour.

Latest drivers. Happens on amd, intel, nvidia 5070, nvidia 1080, nvidia 4060.

Windows 11 pro genuine.

This can be temporarily solved by:

- enabing and disabling fences

- restarting explorer

- toggling different settings like hide scrollbars when inactive, quick hide etc. Sometimes they work, sometimes i need to toggle different other settings

Wake up. Please.

While it has indeed been reported over the years, it is not at all common; in fact, it's extremely rare. Also, we have never been able to reproduce it.

Lastly, there could be countless reasons it could be occurring, the most obvious is that you have Windows settings or 3rd party product (like DisplayFusion or other desktop altering software) that is altering how (well) Fences performs.

That said, if you perform a clean boot of Fences, can you still reproduce it?

I don't have any desktop altering software.

It happens randomly. Sometimes 3 times a day, sometimes once every two days, so clean boot is not an option.

Is there any way to enable trace logging?

Ok, so that would indicate that it's conditional. Is there ANYTHING you can think of to reliably reproduce it? Can you puzzle together when it most always happens - for example, 'after I end a full screen game or video'?

Also, if you switch your desktop wallpaper to some random solid color, not a 3rd party wallpaper software or 'Windows Slidshow'

Can you reproduce it at all over any number of days?

You are getting serious active engagement from us for an issue that is extremely rare and almost certainly related to what is unique to any client's system \ settings \ 3rd party apps. As is the case with any client report, help us and we will keep trying to help you.
