Stat chnages:
I have been extensively testing tac battles to get a feel for how much stats and skills heroes and regulars should have. I set the leveling system to give very gig rewards as a stopgap measure against Stardock hero gimping. The result was that a hero could get 10hp per level or 3 strength or 3 dexterity or 3 essence or 5% to dodge, assassin, or daring, or 4 to vision, or 1 move point in tac or strat map, or 2 mana per turn (which is currently a broken feature) or 3 inteligence. Obviously some of these could be abused to have too much of something at an early level and all of them are overpowered by level 10. In the begining though. I find war most enjoyable.
Best Battles:
The first thing I came across that was fun to kill was a group of bandits in the forest. There were about six and one of them had a bow. My unit had a war staff (5 atk, 3 def) and a total of 5 other points of def giving him a def of 12 and an attack of 9 after his stats were factored in. The bandits gave no more warning than a shot from their keen archer when they ambushed the novice fighter named Sabeck. They had unfortunately not counted the vigor of this young hero, for he began the battle by smiting their two avant guards with a sinlge strike respectively. The next three were slow, but much hardier. Sabeck, the young, was faster and decided to make a run for their back lines. Knowing that a direct pass would allow them to take first strikes against him, he juked to the right and used a rock as a barrier for his devious plan. The slow bandits were two tiles at his back as he made a first pass at the archer. Taking hits of 1-2 damage each turn reminded him that his survival depended on this evil sot's demise. A turn late the archer was dead, but his allies were close behind. He managed to isolate one and get a first strike before the others met him in melee. He took minor damage with each blow, sometimes being able to absorb or dodge his foe's assails. By the end it came down to he and a single bandit. Sabeck had taken many blows throughout the battle and was very close to death's doorstep. The bandit had 7 of his 12 hp and was overconfident that he would at the least kill this valiant hero before he would sucumb to his own wounds, or the nearby wolves, he could hear holwing from a distance, were planning to scavenge the battle soon after. As the sun began to fall the initiaive was Sabeck's. He gathered all his might for a final blow to end this savage day. With every fiber of his being he swung his deadly staff directly at the head of his vile attacker. Then, just before he could make contact, the bandit ducked below his mighty blow. Now, with the initiative belonging to the bandit, he swung his club at Sabeck, hoping to bash the remaining life from this hero's body. The blow came strong and fast, had Sabeck not trained for months to use the momentum of one's opponent to fuel his counter, the day would have gone to the bandit. Fortunately Sabeck caught the bandit's club with his satff and used the momentum to swing a blow against the bandit's feet, knocking him to the ground. Once on the ground, it was merely a formality to bash in his skull with the blunt force of sthe butt of his staff. A single crack was heard from the distance, alerting the wolves to a feast of man. From that day Sabeck was know as Sabeck, The Tenacious. Songs were made in his honor and a feast was held by wolf and king that night.
Also, killing trolls that have a lot of hp and a high attack but low defense is great fun. It requires several heroes to gang up on and destroy it. Tanks, avant guardsmen, and wizards become a necessity for this type of battle. Of course all you will really need is a group of mages but I play on a large enough map that I can only afford one per party.
Anyone else got some war stories?
