Let's be honest. WC, altough a different entity, is still own by Stardock and serves a purpose. This purpose is to offer the community a place where they can gather and find what they need for the products they like. But doing so cost money, loads of money! I wonder if some of you realize that running a site like WC can cost in many hundreds if not thousands each month! How do you pay for that if you have no outsource fund? Someone has to pay and Stardock does. The problem, as pointed out

Tarkus, let's make things clear once and for all: I looooove W2K and praise W2K whenever I can. So much that i'm pursuing the W2K certification. Since XP is based on W2K's kernel then I should love it too when it comes out (although I haven't tried it yet). But, that WPA bugs me. As I said earlier, it's a personal opinion on the subject and we obviously both have different opinion on it. And to answer your question about if they do it already I can't tell for sure since i'm not Mic

When I took typing lessons 10 years from now, I was hitting around 80 to 100 words per minute at the end. Since then I greatly increased my speed so I would say at least 130 if not more. But I do such score in my maternal language (french). In english, here's what I got : Percentage Accuracy : 100% Percentage Inaccuracy : 0% Characters per minute : 336 cpm Characters per second : 5 cps Words per minute : 67 wpm Words per second : 1 wps Total Speed status : Too

Tarkus, maybe during the installation no critical info is gathered but you still can't be sure what are all the possibilities later. May I remind you the GUID controversy w/Win98, Office 97 & IE4. It wasn't "suppose" to be used that way but at the end, it was. With WPA, another process is, of course, involved but basically, it's the same thing: infos are gathered from your PC to create a unique ID except that now, it's required to activate your product. What are the possibilities then, after

I understand your point hoverboy and I thank you to clear this out. My point was that having to give info on what I own and not knowing what info I give makes me reticent. But I want to make clear that i'm with any anti-piracy initiative since I believe its a real need but only as long as it doesn't infringe my own privacy. So the questions remaining are : What makes an anti-piracy initiative fair and reasonnable? What's the limit after which it makes it an infrigement to someone's privacy?

Tarkus, how can you be sure Microsoft won't (or isn't already) gather personal info? To date, they haven't made public the info they'll gather because, for some reason, they don't want us to know yet. And what about the registration of XP itself? Supposely, WPA and registration will be two different things. But for how long? Do you realize how easy it would be to associate the two database and have one large repositary of personal info? Ok, you may say i'm paranoic and you're right

Then I would suggest a clean install of W2K, Sheen. NFTS shouldn't pose a problem when properly configured. Maybe you mess a bit too much with permissions. Hint: Never mess with System account permissions - can bring system to not reboot For SBLive issue, I wonder what problem you have coz I own one and it works just fine with Win2K. Check on sblive.com to get the latest one.

Just to add that I wave at both W2K Pro and Server series. Smooth icons, interface, and such are just candies to me. The important things to look at for an NT based OS is the Kernel: how secure is it and how does it ease support and administration? That's the questions we should care about. Interface concerns, etc. are for Win9x/ME. Still, on the gaming side, W2K is already a winner anyway. It took some times 'til we get fast and stable drivers but that day has now arrived. Btw, I

Not me, at least, not if they hang on their idea of WPA (as the majority of people according to reviews I found in magazine). XP is actually a little revamp of W2K which is already the best OS Microsoft did to date. So why would I feel the need to upgrade after only a year and a half of great pleasures with W2K (and only few months of full 3rd party drivers support :0)? For skinning, ODNT already offers me that possibility. And for WPA, I recommend that you read that short article http://www.w

The channel is indeed on efnet (#wincustomize) and most server requires IDENT to be enabled. It would be great if some of you could come in! I personnaly get in at lunch time (12PM or so) and later in the evening. Hope to have a chat with you soon :o)

One question: When we reach the JourneyMan "status", how can we expect to go higher than that? What are the criterias? I've read the About section and it looks to me that status beyond JourneyMan are elective (Admins of WC elect certains user to wizop, etc.) Am I right or do I need an eye check?

I have to admit the jpg compression level used create noticeable artifacts. I did some test myself and if we could up the jpg compression to about 30-35% (in PS) which represents approx. 7 to 8K in file size, then most of the artifacts would be gone. On the other hand, do we really need to have high quality thumbs since we still have access to the zoom feature which gives full quality picture... that's something we could debate for some times <img src="http://images.stardock.com/images/smiles/

Btw, we should recommend to the CS dev team to create a new skin for Frogboy. Imagine: In de_dust, you pass slowly under the bridge when WOMP! A cute little frog jumps down in front of you, throwing sharp copies of the WC Skins 2001 CD like if they were ninja stars!
