What is Truth?

What is truth? What is this thing that people hold so dear? It seems so subjective, so random that it's hard to tack down and hold in one place long enough to examine and dissect it.

The dictionary says that truth is conformity to fact. Fact is defined as information based on real occurances. Does that mean that the truth is an occurance, or information about an occurance?

What is the truth? Is a fetus a person? Is that the truth?

Does the sky look blue? Is that the truth?

Is religion the truth, or a source to a greater truth?

What is truth?

Something I'm pondering. Every time I try to break an abstract idea down into it's more base components, it seems that all I get are reoccuring words.

Peace,

Beebes

I think truth is pretty hard to pin down...I think there are things that are absolutely true, but other things that are true based on a specific person's perception.

That prolly made no sense.

Interesting thoughts, Beebles.

Truth...a fact, yes....but, some truths are based on perceptions or beliefs...what is true for you is not exactly true for someone else when talking about religion, opinions, and theories. Real, concrete truth is all around us....such as you're name is Alex...we got to school....I have a large coat(thought I was going to say penis didn't you? )

Well, that's about all I've got for you...too bad I can't make you understand it the way I do...I tend to ramble sometimes.

Thought provoking...good job,

Truth is Timmy getting trapped in the well and dying there because Lassie is too busy chasing a rabbit or because only stoned people understand "dog".

Truth is the Brady kids turning on each other because there is only one bathroom for 8 freaking people.

Truth is a reporter calling a man an idiot for putting a mobile home with no foundation in Tornado Alley.

Truth is the majority of people are not liberals or conservatives, not right-wing or left. Most people just want a safe place for their family and themselves to live, and could give two farts in a windstorm if Kerry french-kissed Chirac or if Bush just wanted to one-up his father.

Even if no one believed it, truth would still be truth. That doesn't mean we don't go through our lives clinging to our perceptions of truth, but in the end, our perceptions are not what defines truth from error. You touch on a good example of perception = truth though, we know the sky is not blue, but when we look up, blue is what we perceive. Of course, fact has made a claim on that one, since we now know that "blue" is a descriptor of perception, not necessarily fact, or even truth.

there is only one hard fact TRUTH.....in the end we will all die.

Well, yes, there is empiracle evidence, but you really don't know that EVERYONE will die.

Thank you all for you responses. I think it's good to think about these things, because if you don't, then do you really understand? Or do you just think you understand, and leave it at that?

shallow people take things at face value... but Beebes, truth is subjective, it cannot be anything but. What i accept as truth doesn't necessairly mean the dude sitting across the bus holds that same truth...

it's all very post-modernist I know but there's an element of logic to it - I make my own decisions and come to a point where I accept an opinion as 'truth' but in examining the same topic you can come to a conclusion and hold a truth although it is different to mine. They do not negate eachother, they are simply different.

we are all different people, hold different values, morals and standards so isn't it logical to follow the same train of thought and say that we all have different truths?

Our perception of truth is subjective, but our perception of someting does not actually affect that thing at all. As I said before, truth would still be truth, even if no one believed it.

Alex, don't do this to me... I could go on for just about forever once you get me thinking like this.

Truth, IMO, isn't just stating the facts. Truth is stating them and knowing they are fact. I could say that the moon is real. That's a fact, but in some twisted (matrix) theory you could try to deny that fact. Because I say it's real and know it is that makes it the truth. This person saying that it isn't, would also be telling the truth as far as he/she is concerned.

The earth is round. That is the truth. Back in the day though...

The earth is flat. That WAS the truth. Does that sound right to anyone else? I think it makes perfect sense, but if not, maybe I could go more in depth sometime.

I just realized that my 'know' = everyone else's 'perception'. So, I guess that means i agree with just about everyone else here.

Are you turning into Stacey, Brandon? Sounds like it, you're agreeing with everyone. lol j/k.

Anyways.....couldn't truth also be an opinion? If you stated your opinion about a certain thing thing you're more than likely telling the truth. Because an opinion is what you believe, so would that be the truth too? Gah! You have me thinking now. lol. I'm not even sure if I'm making any sense. But that's me I guess.

.I have a large coat(though I was going to say penis didn't you? )

Shaun, only you would say that anyways. I actually didn't think about that until you stated the obvious in the parenthesis.

Truth is an absolute, yet relative ideal, a constant and an enigma. I know what it is, but yet can not describe it.

Is truth relative to it's position?

And if truth is relative, is it absolute?

You pose an abstract question about an even more opaque reality. To me, truth is as hard as stone. It can and frequently does hit someone in the face. Truth must hurt, and hurt is a very wide-ranging term. Discomfort is a good indicator for what is true and real. Truth is frequently followed with the thought that you'd rather not have heard what was said. Truth makes one think in the negative. A blatant lie is often softer and less damaging to a person than the truth. Truth is often something that can be easily ignored, or brushed aside. Truth is something that escapes our minds more quickly than anything else. Truth is NOT something that would or could ever set one free. Quite the contrary. The only time that term applies is when a murderer has done enough time that he could be released if only he would admit to his guilt. That's it. The only time that term applies. And it's used so often too. Someone made a quip out of something that is untrue. Truth, my friends, isn't always the best route to take. Actually, if you judge things by it's pain ratio factor, telling a loved one the truth, to me, would be morally wrong if you know it's going to truly hurt them or break their heart.

Well, Reiki, I can see where you're coming from. But how does truth make on think in a negative way?

I deleted your post on my other article, I'm sorry that it turned out like that. It just doesn't seem wise to post about something you don't know all the facts about.

Welcome to my blog.
