World Record Failure

        Well, the Laughlin, NV attempt to set a world record for "Largest Carol Service" (i.e., most people singing Christmas Carols at one time) failed. We missed the mark by 50 people. 50 lousy people. Can you believe that? That's like finally getting to make love to the girl of your dreams and 3 seconds in her dad walks through the door forcing you to jump out a second-story window.

        Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrgh. This sucks.

        Well, there are 1,126 people (myself included) who can look at the rest of the community and sneer at their lack of spirit (Christmas and otherwise).

        I'm plotting. The little wheels are turning. I'm now obsessed. No-one will deny me this record! Bwahahahaha!!!

 

        (Not) in other news, event leaders told us to just read the papers to find out if we'd succeeded. One slight problem -- all the &*^%ing papers around here except for the tourist-themed entertainment rags (who have no incentive to follow-up) chose to ignore the event! (No wonder we fell short.) Okay, one paper had a picture of Ronald McDonald and Santa standing together singing. (I took virtually the same pic of them later.) That was it. The entire coverage. Meanwhile, the front page treated us to the 1000th heartwarming holiday story about homeless women getting makeovers to make them feel all purty an' special an' such. *BLECH*

        After scouring the papers for 2 days I finally had to track down a Colorado Belle employee and get the information myself. I swear, the next time I feel I can spare $10 for a new domain name I'm gonna start my own Laughlin/Bullhead media conglomerate. (Aww, what the heck: Bwahahahaha!!!)

 

        At least I got a free holiday buffet out of the deal.

whatta drag.   if youd hadda initial target number, im sure you coulda pulled 50 people outta their campers or something. 

that laughlin/bullheadcity idea is prolly worth pursuing.

(i dont guess they run the laughlin tourist commericials there so this may not make a lotta sense to you but it appears there are more than 50 people in the cucamonga singles club that has their first annual river race in laughlin...dont worry, youre not missin a thing.  well maybe the chick who acts as the started for the race but..)

I think the big mistake was not knowing at all times exactly how many people they had penned up in the valet-parking lot. We shouldn't have had to wait to find out if we'd made it, they should have known all along and taken steps to induce more people into the lot if we were short. (For one thing, they should have been using computers to register people, not just sign-up sheets.) They could have gone on the PA and announced -- "Sing for your supper! Help us break a world record right now in our lot and receive a free meal voucher. You win whether we do or not. Hurry up folks, this might be the only sure thing in Laughlin!"

Since the Colorado Belle and the Edgewater are sister properties they had two casinos to pimp. Surely, we could have pulled in 50 more people! (And I'm not even going to get into how the pre-event promotion was lacking. There were carolers who didn't even know about the meal vouchers. While Vegas did stories about a kid trying to break a bowling record, they missed the attempt for So. Nevada glory in their own backyard.)

I haven't seen a Laughlin tourism ad since I left L.A.

Strike that -- when I had cable I used to watch KTLA (it served as our WB station) so I might have seen one, but most of the ones I recall ever seeing were during the KABC news.
