Phantom fence?

Can't remove screen area that looks like a fence

from Stardock Forums

My problem started while I was using Fences 3. A mysterious column appears on my screen.  It blurs the background like other fences, but has no visible title or contents.  I can move its left and right boundaries and width with my mouse.  It extends from the top to the bottom of the screen.  By the time I became aware of the issue the restore window opportunity had passed. (It should be longer!)

I had hoped that upgrading to Fences 6 would rectify the issue, but it remains.

The app is great but I am reticent to purchase the newer version as it does not appear to resolve the problem.

I welcome any suggestions.

Hi CameraBoy, we're happy to take a look at this. Could you submit an error report via the Troubleshooting menu in v6?

About → Troubleshooting → Create error report package

This should help us get a better idea. Turning on advanced logging before uploading might help get extra info too, but the basic report should be enough. (About → Troubleshooting → Enabled advanced logging, reboot, then create package)

Wow, well this is a first. I don't know how this could have gotten to be this way, but yes there is a rogue group.

This is something you can fix yourself, if you're familiar with the Windows registry and command line. If not, we can look to address in an upcoming release.

If you're familiar with the registry and command line, do the following:
1) Open command line
2) Open regedit
3) End explorer process using taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
4) In regedit, head to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Stardock\Fences\Groups
5) Remove the value that looks like this, in position 2 related to "photography", which is the rouge group. The contents looks like:

8|40|-170232|236|177777
or
8|2583|-95190|105|99409

With that removed, that group will not load.

6) Enter explorer.exe in command prompt to restart explorer, which will restart Fences as well.

 

In any event, we'll look to see what we can do to make sure these scenarios don't happen to others. Both the Y-offset (-170232) and height (1777777) are wildly invalid with no real reason here on how they got to the be that way. If you have any guesses please let us know. At any rate, good catch!

Thank you for the fix!  The above instructions deleted the rogue Fence and recovered over 40 icons that had been lost. (Now I have to figure which ones are still relevant. 😄 )

It is nice to regain the screen real estate.  I can't say how it happened, possibly an errant mouse swipe?

Now I can take a look at the new features in Fences6.
