SC: Origins freezes after opening cutscenes

I just purchased this game and was able to install it via Steam OK. It opens and runs fine, and I can customize my name and the ship name. However, after that all I get is a message saying that the rest of the supplies and crew will be on board shortly. The game just hangs there. I've left it for 5 minutes without anything changing. I click on anything, the arrow changes to an hourglass, and then the screen gets a white overlay and a message from steam saying the game is not responding. I have tried verifying files, uninstalling and reinstalling, running offline, running with AV disabled, and nothing works.

One thing I notice is that the start screen for the game (where you select new game/load game/etc.) says Star Control Earth Rising instead of Star Control Origins. I know Earth Rising is the DLC for this game that I did not purchase, and am wondering if that could be the cause of the issue - it is looking for an SC:ER file to continue instead of an SC:O file? If so how do I fix it - I don't want to spend money on DLC when I haven't even played the game yet.

Update: I tried opting in to the Beta, and it's still not working

Can I get a reply on this please? I have been waiting over a week to play this game since I bought it. Is ther any additional information I can provide to troubleshoot this? My system exceeds the recommended specifications for the game, so that is not the issue.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble.

It would help if we could see what's in your runlog.txt file, it is located in ...\Documents\My Games\Star Control

If you could upload it to a cloud service (DropBox, Google Drive, One Drive) and post a link here, the developers can take a look at it.

Thank you for your patience and patronage.

Hello,

As per your request, here is the link to runlog.txt:

I also found runlog_previous.txt in the same folder:

Thank you for your assistance in this matter. I played SC2 and enjoyed it, so was looking forward to trying this reboot.

Thank you. I will pass these along to the dev team.

Sadly no. However, I have taken a look over them and I want you to check what is your system's page file size.

For details check the Support FAQ under Page File Setting.

Edit:

What graphics card do you have?

I have tried this with automatic sizing, and a fixed size of 8 gb (8192 mb), and get the same result either way. Is there any other information that could assist with this matter? Here is a link to my system inof so that you can see my system clearly meets the requirement for this:

Enter the game and then go to Options, in Visual and Audio tell me what you have set Anti Aliasing, Texture and Shade Detail, and Shadow Detail.

Settings

Here you go, figure it's easier to provide a screenshot rather than type it all out. The resolution is the same as my Windows Desktop resolution

Set Anti Aliasing to 0, turn off VSync and try playing the game.

Would you reupload the runlongs? To see if anything changed.

I have exactly the same issue, every time the game freezes right after the initial cutscenes. Game files integrity validation always fails (1 file always failing and needs to be reacquired). Ended up downloading all DLCs in case this fixed the issue but no luck. Deleted and reinstalled the game more than 3 times already, ran at lowest settings problem persists. Each time the log file shows the following errors, maybe these help: Error: NPC Line "EP4_GlooshCartographer_58" does not have a valid translation ... ... Preparing to enter dialog scene HumanCommanderDialogScene Scene Mode: Entering LOADING_POPUP Game Loop Mode: Entering LOADING Assert Fail: fileBuffer.m_uiSize < fileBuffer.m_uiCapacity File D:\StarControl_BM\Main\Libs\MVC\Common\MVC_Library.cpp Line 2925 (15 duplicates) Preparing to enter dialog scene HumanCommanderDialogScene Scene Mode: Entering DIALOG Game Loop Mode: Entering DIALOG And this is when the freeze happens. Strange thing is that D:\ drive for me is my external USB drive that has nothing to do with the game. Removed the USB, reinstalled the game, same issue.

Nothing really changed. Your system meets the minimum requirements, barely.

Something I find odd is that in your system specs it says it has 8 GB RAM, but in the runlog it says 4 GB for shared memory.

INISettings::DetermineVRAM dedicatedVideoMemory 128MB dedicatedSystemMemory 0MB sharedSystemMemory 4038MB vendorID 8086 deviceID 5916

Go to Documents\My Games\Star Control and rename or delete settings.ini, start the game, open Options, set the minimum values for graphic settings. restart the game to make sure the graphic changes have taken affect, then start a new campaign.

The file that is not verified is one that gets modified, Steam sees it as being different so it requires is.

What language are you playing the game in?

What are your system's specs?

I deleted the settings.ini, restarted steam, set the options for the minimum, restarted steam again, and still freezing. I changed my page file from 8 GB to system controlled (I work in IT support, I know a few tricks :) ), rebooted and still doing the same thing

One thing that has not been addressed - the initial Launch screen says Satr Control Origins:

Launch screen

However the starting screen where you select new game says Star Control Earth Rising:

Is there a conflict/error in this somewhere? I do not have the Earth rising expansion, as I do not want to spend more money on DLC for a game that hasn't even started for me

The Earth Rising thing is just a splash-screen, there is no issue caused by it. I double-checked by uninstalling Earth Rising on my system and playing the game.

Are your drivers up do date? Specifically the graphics ones.

From your system's info I see you only have an Intel HD Graphics 620. You can find the latest drivers for that card here.

I updated my drivers (had to get from Asus website instead), rebooted, and am still getting the same thing. COuld it be an issue with multiple monitors, and it trying to run on the other monitor? The second monitor uses a USB adapter that runs with a windows application instead of a driver.

Couldn't hurt to try disabling one monitor, would probably free up some memory.

Disabling/disconnecting the second monitor does not fix the issue, nor does changing the primary monitor to my second (external) monitor, and same with changing the scaling to 100%. I have another game that runs fullscreen, and when that is running I cannot move the mouse off that screen without using alt-tab, or something similar, however with Star Control my full extended desktop is available to the pointer. I alos found a post about resolving this isse for stea, nad tried the suggestions - verifying file integrity (1 file replaced, happens almost every time I run integrity check) as well as cleared game cache and download cache prior to uninstalling and reinstalling.

Long shot, would you follow the instruction here to check if your RAM is ok?

No errors detected. As a test, I tried running the battle simulator, and that started fine, until the end of the 3rd or 4th round when it froze as well.
