Trading Bug

I am not sure how many games I've stopped myself by doing so, just to end up winning faster by doing so.

A carbon civ can trade techs to non-carbon civs, and because these techs are not on their tree, they will trade for them again and again and again.  Good robots would not trade for useless tech.

Guess it depends on who programmed them... plus, “useless” is relative 😉

Useless in that they cannot use it, at all, ever, and will trade you for the same tech time and time again.

So yes, it is useless to everyone, unless you are taking advantage of the exploit.

First I've heard of this exploit. Does this happen on all AI levels?

I tend to play on Gifted, so not sure about any AI levels above that.

Hi,

As far as I know (I play at genius) it works at all levels. And indeed I too avoid it though of course when trading, I try to give the dear AI the techs which are least useful to them.

One thing they will also do is to pay high prices for techs which are useless once you've built the associated wonder such as pilgrimage and the restaurant. That is an exploit which I am prepared to use myself though you could argue that it's almost equally exploitative.

Of course each tech that they acquire does bring them closer to the next tech level which can be useful in itself. However as I understand it (what AdamMG has said has reminded me) when a robot buys a carbon  tech such as something to do with entertainment then it doesn't get added to their list so they can't even sell it on (even when tech brokering is enabled - I play with it disabled)?

Cheers,

Jon

Jon,

That is correct.  Entertainment and food techs will be bought by synthetics, it won't get added to their list, and they will buy the same techs the next time you speak with them.  In fact, even cycling through civs in the trade screen back to the same synthetic civ, will place the techs tradeable with them again.  One can wipe a synthetic out of money, techs, resources, and starbases, in a single turn, trading them same techs over and over.

It also works on silicon civs, with higher food techs (so long as it doesn't appear on their tech list).

Sorry if my initial post wasn't super clear.

(edit) When trading, you can tell which techs this will work on. The "number of turns" on the tech mouseover (in your technology list) is blank.

Heavens!

I hadn't realised it was as bad as that That really is quite a serious bug isn't it.

Poor little robots (and Silicon bods)

Cheers,,

Jon

I brought it up in today's meeting and confirmed we have it tracked down. Not sure when we'll have a patch for it but watch this space (and our patchnotes)!

Sorry, that was a poor attempt at humor, bad timing when you were explaining an issue... was in a silly mood...

No worries, it annoyed me at first, and felt my first post wasn't clear enough.  I responded as I did to your post to make sure it was flagged as an actual bug.  And it was, and has been fixed for the next update, so all is good :)

Great to hear it’s been fixed!!! 👍🏻 Again, sorry for the ill-timed/inappropriate comment. I’ll strive to keep my poor humor to myself in the future. 😉
