Finishing your basement?

How many of you own a home and have a basement? If so, did you end up finsihing your basement? Did it come finished?

My wife and I are in the process of finishing our basement. It's almost done and in 2 weeks the carpet will get installed. We're pretty excited since it'll mean getting the kids out of my office (where all the computers are currently stuffed here at home).

What about you? What do you do with your basement if you have one?

You don't wanna know.. /me are imagining Hus with a mad-scientist kit bubbling and smoking and percolating now!

We have only a crawlspace but the original floorplan was for a daylight basement but it was built to not have a basement.

Anyone wealthy enough here to have an indoor pool? I wonder if anyone has ever put an indoor pool in their basement? That would be so cool!

A lot of folks turn their basements into recreational rooms for their kids or the "bar" for Dad or a pool/gaming room etc. or the room for the College aged kids and stuff.

I have finished millions of dollars worth of 'basements'...just not my own.....much to my wife's chagrin...it's the old story of the plumber's house has the leaky taps....

You know all that stuff that goes in the garage?

I don't have a garage, but I do have a basement!

You wouldn't believe the stuuf I have jammed in it, or the stuff I used to do down there before I built these computers. Had a TI 994A down there before I updated in '99.

I just had to rip up the carpet from my basement and empty it. I found that when floods hit. ( I live in Indiana) The water goes backwards. Filling my basement up not draining down, So now I have to save up $5,000 to have it waterproofed before we can use it again. It'll be a music/movie room or another bedroom for one of the kids when it's done again.

We just cleared our basement from 75% of the stuff that was laying arround in the shelves there. Nobody for example really needs 2 386SX-16 MHz computers or a HPDeskJet 500C anymore today...

Our basement is currently unfinished. It's all cement and exposed ceiling joists with a staircase dividing it. I put a rug on one side, painted the cement walls, covered the ceiling with a tapestry, and use it as a music space. I keep my guitars down there and sometimes friends bring over the bass and drums. The other half serves as the laundry room and storage. We rent the house from my mother-in-law, so I don't intend to finish it unless we end up buying it from her some day.

We really don't have 'basements' but every Aussie Boy needs a 'Shed'!

I know....but these backward folk wouldn't appreciate the great Aussie 'shed' and what it means to the Aussie red-blooded male...

Brad, our basement is partially finished but and when my kids were younger, they played down there all of the time. However we're having it totally redone as an apartment in case my mother-in-law has to come live with us sometime down the road. In the meantime I've slipped in a nice Plasma TV as part of the deal with my wife.

In the meantime, there will be a separate bedroom, living room and a nice kitchen down there for those nights I want to be alone.
