Spit and Polish

I don't see what is so mysterious... misspellings and grammar are:

A) Not what they would be passionate about by default (they are programmers/designers/etc. I doubt many of them are passionate writers/editors)

B.) Not going to be noticed much by the majority of customers.

C) Polishing GRAMMAR produces 0$ for the company. 

D) Does not significantly impact gameplay. 

While it would be nice to see some cleanup, it is hard to make a business case for them fixing this. To be clear, I don't want to discourage you from speaking up... and I hope they read your message... I'm hoping to "demystify" the issue for you.

As a professional software developer for more than 40 years, I have to agree with the original post. Perhaps I'm old school, but if I were responsible for them I would be embarrassed by the typos and grammatical mistakes seen in the game.

They are catching some of them - for example - on the IGN game review site the political screen misspelled dissenting - yet it's spelled correctly on Stardock's site.

Text is part of the interface. This is what the customers see, and as much attention to detail should be placed in this area as is put into the underlying code.

Again, Frogboy, it would be nice if we had a public version-control system where we (the community) could raise issues and provide patches for this stuff, since it's almost as simple to do it yourself as submit a ticket.

It would save StarDock a lot of work.

That's why I went out and created it myself, but it would be better if we had a "blessed" DVCS.

Honestly, I don't notice any typos anymore, but you folks don't ever seem to get around to updating the tooltips and interface notes when you make balance changes, so most of that text is REALLY stale and misleading.

There is no good way for me to create a list while I'm playing the game. Is there a file somewhere that I could read/edit? I could then send you the corrections that way-- or post them here, whichever you prefer.

I started a new game a couple days ago and by turn 30 I found several needed corrections (a couple were in the Bazaar text). An editable file would be of great help to me, and I'm happy to assist.

Also, there are three bugs that come to mind:

• The Week number (during saves/auto saves) does not match the Turn number after turn 50. The "count" starts over from  one.
• The Tech progress bar (turns remaining) is rarely correct when I hover over it. This is especially true if I get a tech bump (15%) from an anomaly. The only way I know to make it right again is to go to the Tech screen. This seems to correct the error.
• And most annoying, if I go to the Ideology screen, then exit, it invariably sends me to the Tech screen. Many times I have to choose a Tech again to complete it. I see no reason for Ideology to be sending me to Technology.

I gotta be honest, I actually thought this was a joke/parody topic when I first read it.

I'm not saying typos belong in ANY game, but, "OONLESSS DEY LUK LEIKE THEESEE", then it deserves nowhere near the seriousness that the OP gave it.   While Draginol is doing cool things with the AI, I spot a person complaining about whether it's "Breakdown", "Break-down", or "Break down", and he's........actually serious.

I mean, this is major back burner level stuff here, just saying.

From the Stellaris 1.6 "Adams" patch last year:

Im kinda seeing the point of the op. If we really look at this almost every book written would have the same problem. Most books get rewritten before you see them. This is also why we have a first, second, and third draft in english. There is a field for creative writers to proof read. Books otherwise would have the same problem.

This is good feedback but none of these are typos.   I've sent them on though.

Key word - BOOKS, as in products that are entirely text, kinda makes sense in that case.

Video Games are not books, and are far from entirely text.  I don't see the argument for treating typos anywhere near this serious.  Not that they are of zero importance BUT, the OP was complaining about a phrase, being written as a word.  Language is ever evolving and phrases do evolve into actual words, not to mention, quite a few people think "breakdown" is a word, meaning it will most likely be recognized as one in 5-20 years time, and was an easy mistake to make.

So easy to make typos, that not everyone would notice, and wouldn't necessarily be considered typos in a few years anyway, no, I don't want the developers wasting their time on that.  Maybe keep them out of the trailers so no one nitpicks like this, but beyond that, no.  There are far more critical areas  they can focus their energy, and I'd rather they do so.

I was not complaining about a phrase being written as a word. I was talking about yet another misspelling of a word. FYI, "breakdown" is a word, "brakedown" is not. Besides, any spell checker worth its salt would catch something like this. I don't see this as adding a lot of work to the writer's job. It is the job.

Hi JerkClock,

Techies and programmers are generally brilliant people, but mostly, they can't speak English. Surely, somebody is tasked with the job of writing, and not necessarily programming, at SD. Writers probably don't make for very good coders, either. (I've tried and am lousy at it.)

All I am asking is that the programmers do their job, and the writers do theirs, and ne'er the twain shall meet. They both have their place in creating a polished, professional product that not only functions the way it should, but which also has a well-written interface.

As an aside, I must say that whomever does the writing for GC3 has a unique wit and I have enjoyed it over the years. I remember laughing out loud at some of the banter in GC2. Fun stuff!

Other publishers manage it, so why not do the same for our beloved GC3? Back-burner stuff? Hardly... it can make or break a game.

Damn, I could have sworn the job was programming and developing a working, and fun game.  I guess it's actually slaving over whether they wrote a word slightly wrong, or made a very difficult to catch typo somewhere.

And yeah, I remember when "Off Course" broke FF7 for me, so much fun could have been had playing it, but then I read that typo, and lost my fucking mind.  It ruined the experience man.  Or that time I played Mega Man 6, I had to stop playing because Wily/Mr.X said "Faild" instead of "Failed", it broke the game, man.  Then there was that time I actually beat Ghosts and Goblins, only to have my moment RUINED by "Congratulation" and "Happy End", all that sense of accomplishment doing what few gamers would ever do?  Gone, because typo, it broke the experience.

Again, I'm NOT saying this is of ZERO importance, but you are making Mount Everest out of a back yard clump.

And yes, people DO joke about these things, but what they DON'T do, is rage quit the game, and talk about how it ruined their experience.  Or, at least, so few do it as to not be worth worrying about.  And they're far worse typos than what you're complaining about.
