Why aren't the Minors in the Diplomacy UI?

I thought for a while that it was just something I'd made happen by carrying a game across updates, but it seems to have been consistent since I installed Crusade.

Have I broken my installation, missed something 'obvious' in the UI, or are Minors now there only as something for a little invasion practice?

Yes, Frogboy nerfed the minor races in Crusade on purpose.  I can't remember/didn't know his reasons for it.  Anyway, about all you can do with them now is send trade ships and invade.

Hrm. I wouldn't call that a nerf, given that I never saw them try to mess with me or an AI. They do still have that small chance of colonizing another world or two, so they seem more like candy now.

I guess I'll just turn them off next game.

p.s. Is "Frogbody" some sort of inside joke, or just a typo?

Typo.  I'll fix it.

To be honest, sincerely I wonder what's the Minors' reason of existence. I mean, they don't expand (nor by colonizing neither by war) and aren't a threat at all, they're just good as source for technology trading or stealing (or, as already said, to be conquered by someone else, player or AI doesn't matter).

No tech trades with them in Crusade. Pretty useless except as easy war fodder or early trade route if no one else is around.

Their intent was so that there would be someone else to utilize diplomacy with... however, it was apparently to hard to balance, so diplomacy with Minors was completely removed...

So yeah... they serve little purpose. It porbably makes more sense to add a major faction, but at a lower AI intelligence to represent "minor" factions.

Notably, my mod GRM does get some Minors to expand, by virtue of gifting some of them a Colony Ship at game start. Which does make them a tiny bit more interesting.

The reason frogboy gave was they are a carryover for when computers didnt have the resources. Now that you can have 100 factions there is no point, but to conquer them just add majors factions instead.

Even in Crusade they do occasionally colonize a neighboring world. Very occasionally. And maybe it's more often on the larger maps? (I tend to play Immense these days.)

Turning them off and adding some low-brow AIs does sound like an interesting thing to try sometime, although I suspect that the main thing that would do would be to provide slightly larger pools of related, slightly difficult worlds to take.

They do colonise other worlds if they pick the right ideology traits.
