Newbie Question, What does "Experience Points +5" do for me?

I apologize for an agonizingly newbie question, but after not playing for several months I'm going through the tutorial after the 2.0 drop to get accustomed to things again. And I come across a Capsule which gives me credits and Experience Points +5. For the life of me I can't remember what "Experience Points" do for me. I looked in the PDF manual and searched the Wiki but no joy, probably because it is obvious. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

It raises the experience level on that particular ship/fleet. Right now higher levels just give you better hitpoints. Hopefully will change/become better down the road.

Thanks for the reply. Since only my Survey ship is finding these I guess it's not going to have a significant effect on the game.

You also get experience for destroying enemy ships,

also Mercenaries and ships with precursor weapons(the one per player one you get from the LostTreasures DLC)

get additional benefits for leveling up(like more movespeed/weapon power/weapon range/ship range etc)
