Research Victory Question

I'm trying to figure out how to win via Research Victory. 

I can't research the fourth-column items in the Tech Tree. Do all the items in a tech tree need to be researched before you can access the fourth-column items? Or is it simply a matter of waiting until Age of Ascendancy is finished?

You have to finish Age of Ascendancy, that forth coloumn I think is Age of Victory.

I never understood why you would research a few techs for a research victory. Why not researching better than anyone else for a certain period of time. First to research a certain amount of points.
