Lev's Headstart Challenge

Game gotten too easy? Figured out all the exploits? Time to take the Headstart Challenge!

I propose a handicap for the human player: Stay on your home planet for X number of turns before being allowed to colonize any other planets. Here are the rules:

  • You may not colonize any planet before turn X (see note).
  • You may research, build, and explore whatever you want immediately.
  • You may contact other races and negotiate anything, as per normal.
  • You may build starbases immediately.
  • Optional Bonus Challenge: You may not build any colony ships before turn X.

Note: We need to decide what a good number of turns are to wait. 20? 35? 50? 100? Probably depends on map size and player count. Please discuss.

Let me know what you think, or post a short AAR to let me know how it went.

Look forward to hearing about it.

Distant Worlds did this really well but you didn't need to wait X turns you could simply set-up the AI to be more advanced at the start of the game.  One of the risks in such games is the AI just dogpiling you since you are weak.  To avoid this you could also set what AI were nearby and which were distant i.e. so you can roleplay being a new kid on the bloke with some nearby friends while being surrounded by more distant empires that were more aggressive and advanced.  It would be cool if Gal Civ 3 had something similar. The base GC3 campaign on Godlike sort of emulates this as the Drengin are way ahead, particularly Mission 3.
