Finally!

After playing since the beginning, and once the Mega Events DLC came out I've been anxiously awaiting the return of the Dread Lords. I remember in GC2 they would instill fear in me and if I didn't take care of them right away I was a goner. Well, after having them in my game 4x now and not once did I ever run into them- some other race would vanquish them before I even spotted one of their ships! Now, after 1600+ hours of gaming, my fifth time having them (the Dread Lords) in my game, I have finally run into them. It's actually the first time I felt the AI gave me a little run for my money. They spawned on the other side of the galaxy from me. the eventually were able to carve out a corner for themselves and were continuing to expand. It was around turn 340+ that I ran into them and they destroyed my small survey fleet. Aha!, I think to myself, and proceed to send a newly produced fleet with my latest and greatest weapons. We slug it out and I'm victorious with 4 loses of my 8 ship fleet of large varied ships. They start to send more fleets my way and I do the same. I keep destroying theirs but continue to take loses. They start to ramp up the size of their fleets requiring me to task more planets on building ships. It was nice having another race able to crank out ships almost as fast as I could, and they were deadly to boot! They simultaneously continued their expansion to the west while trying to deal with me to their Southeast. It was time to send in transports to take away their industrial base. It took about 50 turns but I was able to easily take care of them. It had me wishing I had another 50-100 turns before I did run into them so they could have been a major force to deal with.

The Peacekeepers are another story... I've had them in several games but still haven't had to deal with them. I guess it's because of my chosen play style and settings. Maps are usually immense to insane in size, tight clusters, 25-30 major races, rare minors, and uncommon habitable planets. The AI are only set to Gifted and evidently do a much better job at dealing with these threats than they did in GC2. I'm going to have to increase the frequency of the Mega Events to try and get more encounters with them! Yup, still enjoying this game.

Gosh, I don't have anywhere near 1600 (!) hours into this game, maybe 400, which is a lot. But I've run into the Dreadlords quite a few times. If they spawn in your area very early, you're toast. But if you have time to build up, they're toast. Their ships all have beam + gun weapons + gun defenses. My biggest ships now have missile weapons plus a fair amount of beam and gun defenses. In my current game I'm at about turn 400 and they've been building up for 250 turns. I've now conquered almost everything up to them and I'm starting to run into them all of the time. And they're going to be destroyed!

What can I say? I have no life. ;)

Yes, that's usually the way it is. I guess I was used to experiencing running into them very early on most of the time, I'm on a current lucky streak I guess! :)

Go get 'em Bruce!

Yeah i have a game running which needed some exitement and finally along came the dreadlords event. I then noticed they had one pathetic ship and a planet inside my sphere of control which kinda made the moment more like a wet fart. There was an invader ship of mine only one turn away too.

Yeah when I ran into them in my last game, They popped up in my newly conquered area, sent one transport ship to their planet and they were dead.  Killed their fleets on the same turn with ease.  Turn 325ish in a slow pace tech wise game.  No challenge at all :(

The game really knows how to take all the fun out of it

I just nodded the files to make their chance of appearing much higher. They spawned early and killed everyone :)

Now you're talkin'! I don't know, I've resisted the urge to mod my game and just experience it how SD wants it to be so I can judge it through its' incarnations... But these Dread Lords are just a little too wimpy for my current tastes. Every single time they have appeared in my games they are usually destroyed but some other race before I even get to encounter them. That first encounter that I had with them (original post) was the only time they have ever been any kind of issue for any of the races in my games. Still a bit disappointed in them. In GalCiv2, I would dread their appearance and marshal all my forces to find and destroy them asap. Now? I just chuckle to myself when I see they have appeared in my game... :(

I still try to find them as early as I can whenever they appear in my game. I ignored them once and they almost destroyed me later on.
