Can we get a newbie thread going here?

I'm an experienced 4x'r and pick these games up pretty quick.   But I'm lost here.

In CiV or EL you build a unit (7 or so turns) you pop a goody hut and get gold, or culture, or weapons, etc.

In CG3 it's 'You need a survey module'.    So you build some factories, then a shipyard, then modify a freighter, then remove 32 units of weight so you can add a survey module to it then you have to spend 40 turns building it.

This can't be right.   What am I doing wrong here?    I just want to survey space before the game is 160 turns in.

I'm not entirely clear on whether you want to survey anomalies, or just explore space.  You start off with a survey ship, a colony ship, and a scout.  You should use your survey and scout ships to explore, with the survey ship picking up any anomalies you come across (unless your ship is too weak to beat pirates).  If you want to explore faster you can design a cargo hull with an engine, a couple of life support modules, and a lot of sensors, and then buy it in your shipyard.  You usually start out with enough credits to buy a ship or two at the beginning.  I usually don't build another survey ship.

There are a lot of useful threads or youtube casts for beginners. But i still think the game needs a solid tutrial for beginners and advanced.

I find the tutorial less helpful than just doing a quick start.
