Sorcerer King: September 2015 status

Greetings!

We are almost done with Sorcerer King v1.2.  It's a pretty major update to the game that should be out sometime this month.

We are starting to outline what will be in 1.3 and 1.4.

What we'd like to know is where do you want to see this game go?

There are a number of directions it could go. For instance, towards more of a 4X game play or towards more of an RPG. Which do you guys prefer?

4X if I only get one choice.

I vote for more RPG!

+ More quests, especially mid-late game, including a faction quest which spans the entire game

+ Deeper quests involving decisions which affect the 'DM', and vice-versa (think choose-your-own-adventure with choices which affect future possibilities.)

+ More total heroes, and heroes which tie into your personal story via the DM

+ Richer crafting and enchanting system

I recommend the above.

Plenty of 4X's about, not many games like this.

What does Sieges count as? ^^

Well, I think that a lot of what people want is doable from what I see from the xml.  More heroes?  That is relatively easy if you are using the same type of units or similar ones.  Or if you really don't like a hero and want to make them weaker/tougher.

The same with adding more items to enchant.  I've been thinking of working on this as a mod - making the items available better.  I guess my problem is I don't have the graphic ability to make new icons.

I vote for more roguelike!

But seriously, the dude talking about more endgame goals is on the right path. 2 options is so 1991, amirite?

More RPG leaning is my vote, since I think that focuses more to SKs strengths and differentiates it from other games. I'd like to see more champions, more story and quests, and more interactions with rival factions. Perhaps quests from allied rivals for the ability to train their units and create new items, and quests to cause enemy rivals to betray the Sorcerer King?

This. Your RPG elements are what makes this game unique and fun. Shore up the 4X a bit, but this list above is where you should focus.

Also, more and more victory options are key.

By 'faction quest' a mean a separate story telling quest for each sovereign.

I like the idea of more end game winning conditoins.

What would be some that you guys would like to see?

there should be more stuff that makes the games & strategies different from one playthrough to the next

the maps have variety, but there's not enough to make me level up sovereigns/champions in different ways based on what's happening

Would it be more interesting if there was the possibilities of different heroes or are you talking like much broader skill trees?

Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes 2.0 .....

I bought Legendary Heroes the day it came out. NO AI! I mean this thing was as dumb as a post... and the font was atrocious. Worst $40 I've ever spent.

Yes please, even if it's only a 1.99 release!

Yes. My pref would be LH 2.0.  Oh, that wasn't a choice? Well shucks. The RPG elements are what make this game great, but I would love to see more 4x in it to bring it inline with LH.

To bring things back to talk about Sorcerer King...

Looking at a past dev journal touching on similarities between SK and Star Control 2 had me thinking. One of the things that I loved about SC2 was the dialogue and interactions you had with the various quirky aliens. SK has the beginnings of this, with a good cast of factions, but I feel like there should be more there. You do some quests for them, and then they just give you some randomized gifts now and then. I'd definitely like to see more interactions available with them, especially so that they remain interesting even after hitting 5 favor with someone.

More interactions between the rivals would also be neat, beyond "We hate X." An example: you can learn from the Keepers of the Flame about the truth behind the war between the Frozen Realm and Ice Lords. It'd be neat if you could do something with that to mend things between the two.

To tie this in with the win condition ideas, how about a quest/diplomacy victory involving finding a way to destroy/neutralize Curgen's Bane, rather than killing the SK directly? This could require the combined efforts of a number of rivals, dependent on map size, and doing challenging quests for each of them to contribute to the victory.
