So about your hardware...

This may just be a universal gaming thing. But how come almost every thread I see where people are having issues its either a laptop with a terrible integrated shared memory video card, or someone running a cpu thats from 10 years ago? Is it just cause this is a strategy game so they think they can get away with it? I don't expect everyone to have a brand new system every year. Hell I rebuild ever 3-4 years myself and that might even be slight overkill now days.

Thoughts, opinions, tacos?

mmmmmmmm tacos

Most people are very casual gamers and probably don't understand technical requirements very well. They buy a new laptop of the shelf when the old one breaks and expect stuff to work. You know, the kind of people that ask you for technical support when they install to many toolbars etc.

3-4 years for a new pc is way below the average i bet. Steam hardware survey is fun too (but that is a biased sample, the average pc is worse then that)

(apparently only about 15% of gamers have a directx10 or 11 system, oO hard to believe)

The last time around, I beefed up most everything, with the idea that the rig would be viable for at least 10 years.  Cost an arm-and-a leg.  Meanwhile I still had to replace a fried motherboard and video card.  So, the system should be reasonably viable.  HOWEVER, top line game manufacturers seem to think consumers should be upgrading every 3-5 years.  Like we're all made of money or something.

Currently, I refrain from making changes that require me to reinstall ALL of my programs.  That's motherboard and hard drive for the most part.  (Even transferring all of the old hard drive's contents requires going through and reactivating each and every program.  For me, that process takes more than an entire weekend of NOT playing anything or getting much of anything else done.  That's too much like work!  So, generally, if my system doesn't match the Recommended specs, I'll refrain from making the purchase.  Which can be emotionally trying.  NOT get the latest-and-greatest in the _______ series???  That's emotionally cruel and abusive!  But going through the upgrade ritual, just to play ONE game?  Likewise painful.

Yes that is a pain in the ass. That is why I always have 2 systems online. The old one with certain programs that I want to keep but don't want to go through the agony of moving them. The new one with the stuff I bought it to run and a few programs that I use so frequently it is worth it to reinstall them. Eventually I get around to reinstalling all the programs that really matter to me buy it is not a 2-3 day ordeal

I have found that I get about 5 -6 years out of a computer before it starts to wear out and get completely out of date.

Part of the reasoning behind my 3-4 year update cycle is I sell the other one off while its still a very good machine to mitigate the costs of the upgrade. Works out well for me so far.
