research and manufacturing carryover

This topic has come up a lot in other posts. People seem to want a "research" queue so that they do not lose excess research points when they overshoot a project's research cost.

Do excess research points carry over to the next turn's research total like manufacturing does? Has this been tested? A lot of people do not realize that excess manufacturing points carry over to the next turn for whatever project is next manufactured... I wonder if research is the same way.

Research does carry over however...

AFAIK it only carrys over to the next tech in the line if you have it selected.

there are a few problems with the current system

1) i think points are lost if you dont have another tech in the same line selected

2) you can only select the top tech of a specialization if you want to select a tech further down the line

3) you must select a tech in the same line i cant for example choose to que up a manufacturing tech then a military tech then a diplamacy tech.

I just did a "test" with 1.02.    I had a manufacturing tech finish up.   There was no extra research points showing in the research bar.  I switched to a new tech in the commerces area to get a trade route.   When I selected the tech, it said 3 turns to finish.   Still no indication in the research bar.

Then I hit "turn".

The research bar went to 60% full and it now said 1 turn remaining.   And indeed it finished on the next turn.

So I am guessing that research does carry over, and to whatever tech you choose.   Hard to tell if any points were lost, but it can't be many.  I do think that the number of points required should be displayed; perhaps that will be done at some point.  Not a large issue to me, but a convenience.

However, my experience is that if  you select a tech past a specialization that has not been researched, it will research the top tech of the specialization, as you say.  But I haven't checked it lately.

And I agree that you can't queue techs from different lines --- or, I don't know how to do it,  :|

I often see the reduction by more than one turn with the first turn after I had just finished researching something else. What you said seems to confirm that there is "research points carryover" just like there is "manufacturing points carryover" which means that research points are not being wasted.

They've said several times on the dev stream that both research and manufacturing 'carry over' unused points - nothing is lost.

Even if you're completing things in one turn, the game keeps track and stores up unused points, applying them as soon as you build/research something expensive.

The only exception seems to be with manufacturing, if you Rush Buy an improvement, it seems there are no manufacturing carryover points. The points you have dedicated to manufacturing get wasted that turn.

I wonder what happens if you Rush Buy something then move it down on the manufacturing queue... Do your manufacturing points for that turn apply to that current non-rushed project, and the rushed project still gets completed. If so, I am going to have to remember to move Rushed buildings down the queue.
