So, how exactly does the adjecency bonus system work?

I've taken a look at three different planets I own. The one on the left has 4 research stations in the best adjecency setup. That's all research the planet has. The one on the right, has a circle of 4 research stations and a data archive. In the middle hex, I put the research capital. The third planet has no research stations whatsoever.

When I put the planets on research for the full 100%, I get that the planets have 19.4, 21.9 and 19.3 raw research. But I can't work out how that goes. With no research stations on the third planet, how can it possibly have 19.3 raw research? I know that there's a base level even without any structures, but that seems a bit much, doesn't it? The first planet has 19.4 research, which would be too little, if we'd assume that the third planet's research production level is correct. In this case, I'm missing all the adjacency bonus, which count up to 11. So if the base research would be 19, then the actual raw research should be 30, shouldn't it?

The same question goes for the second planet, with my capital. The rate is 21.6, but what happens to the 36 research points gained from the adjacency bonus?

Happy to help.

Adjacency bonuses have no impact on the Raw Research number, that comes from your population, approval, and some techs.

To see what adjacency does, click on one of your buildings. You will notice a level number near the bottom of the tooltip, and then you will see a secondary bonus. Those levels are gained from adjacency, and is noted there.

Lets look at your research lab as an example. A research lab grants a +25% bonus to research, with an additional +5% for each level it gains.

So 2 labs next to each would each be level 1, and would provide 30% research each, or 60% total.

3 labs in a triangle would each be level 2, and would provide 35% research each, or 105% total.

These percentage multiply off your raw research, so while your science planet may have a similar raw number to a regular planet, it will churn out much more research.

The Raw values are from your production (note: production != manufacturing), distributed through the Govern screen. 10 population will produce ~10 production. If you split that into the default 33/33/33, that's 3.33 raw research. Other bonuses, like approval, tech and starbases affecting Production also affect this.

The buildings then provide an additive +% modifier to that raw figure. The adjacency bonus is usually just more +% bonuses - hover over a building and you'll see what the adjacency bonus it has does. In your example, the Technological Capital is giving +240% - that's +200% base, and 8 times +5% from adjacency.

Ok, thanks for the explanation. So it's 5 percentage points added for each increase in the building's level. Thanks :)

Different buildings can have different bonuses. As others have mentioned, check a building's tooltip for details.
