Advice for new EBay seller

Other ways to sell crypt?

EDIT:  May 1, 2015: Seems ebay not a good choice. *Suggestions as to other venues, sites?*  Closing the deal will involved F2F (its real estate, with an alluvial deed).  Tried Craig's list = 2 months no replies.  Newspaper ads = no response after 6 months constant. Funeral homes won't allow posting on their boards (competition?)

END EDIT

Never used Ebay before.  Have only one thing to sell for a friend.  (Really!)  Have researched the basics about EBay.  However -before I jump in and commit - any advice, caveats, cautions from people who have used it before?  Appreciate the help... :)

Just be on the look out for fake buyers. Do everything from the site.

I sold a laptop a while back. I received an email that I had a buyer. It looked exactly like the email that you normally would get. I checked the site and I didn't have a sale. After checking the email I noticed it was fraudulent (the return address was different then the address). Thankfully I didn't send it. Make sure you get paid from the buyer first before sending anything out, print the shipping label from ebay and leave feedback. Feedback is a good indicator if the person you are working with is legit, but use caution.

Only ship to Paypal confirmed addresses. If you ship to a different address you lose your seller protection. If a buyer asks you to ship to another address, politely refuse and inform them of why. I learned this lesson the hard way.

It's an obvious thing, but you will save money buying and printing labels through ebay. They offer a reasonable discount on shipping compared to buying postage directly from the carrier.

In the advanced view of the listing creator you can set buyer requirements. I always block buyers with bad feedback ratings and a history of policy violations.

That's just off the top of my head, but I'm sure someone else will add to the list. Good luck.

I sell items on eBay on occasion, follow the advice above and everything should be fine.

Also make sure you review the fees. Some items have different rates than the standard. Also Paypal charges a fee as well. Both the EBay and PayPal fee are based on the total price AND shipping charged to the buyer.

If the item is unique, the more pictures you include, the better. Also a detailed description will attract more potential buyers. Since you're new, it's best to give the buyer reassurance that you are legitimate.

Include your shipping terms and return policy in the body of the item description. EBay has standard ones you can include, but it's best to be as clear as possible.

One last thing, in a dispute, EBay tends to favor the buyer over the seller.

Ebay has made it more difficult for sellers. As Borg999 has wrote EBay/PayPal favors the buyer if they choose to open a dispute. What is worse is that buyers now have 180 days to open a dispute as apposed to the 45 days it has always been. A buyer can receive the item and use it for a couple days, break it and then open a dispute that it arrived DOA. Also as a new seller you will not get your money from PayPal immediately through PayPal like you would through a private sale. Ebay and PayPal hold money of anyone that has been a seller less than 90 days for a 21 day period.

Thank you all... appreciate it.   I'm selling an above ground crypt for a friend... so shipping charges will  be minimal... just paper.   I had not heard about paypal use - is great advice!   :)
