Question regardin Altarians

In all of my B5.3 games, (just 3-4), the Altarians start off as usual researching big time and colonizing well. Then they seem to go into a funk and fall back in every category.

Is this just a coincidence of a few games or has anyone else notice them playing soft?

With the Intuitive trait, they get a bunch of free techs at the start. I haven't studied them in detail, but when I go to trade techs with them it looks like they've been concentrating on military techs and neglecting the colonizing techs needed to build up their worlds. Anyway, like you, I soon surpass them.
