What is the point to level up regular units ? Can someone list benefits ?

I am new to FE. I see that some units have traits like +something per level but there are plenty of units with triaits written in stone like "Dodge I" and after getting ten and more levels it doesnt upgrade to "Dodge II".

I was lucky to convert on my side a giant spider with Daze abillity and summon spiders. I did some leveling with it and he didnt get new abillities - only HP gain and maybe some accuracy.

Champions (and sovereigns) can get new traits when they level up through the special window that appears.

Some units have traits that give +1 hp/level or similar. 

Other than that, all units including champions and sovereigns gain accuracy and hit points when they level up

It isn't much. There could be level up screen for regular units like in Eador game where player can choose new perks or decide which attribute to increase.

My home town is awful. There could be a puppy and rainbows factory, like some other concept I have in mind and against which I am comparing my home town.
