What non space ships options do we have in SoaSE?

Just installed SoaSE:Rebellion. I am more of a turn based 4X gamer but wanted to give this a try. So my question is, is this just all space ship combat or is there other options like in Masters of Orion for example?

Do we have spies? I see some mods have spies, but is that in the regular game?

Is there buildings we can build on planets? Like research labs, or markets or happiness buildings? If not on the planet in orbit of the planet?

Do we just research better guns, engines armour, or can we research other things like better research labs, markets, buildings (if we have them.)

This game is a daunting for me. Trying the tutorials and just want to make sure what I am getting into and not to be disappointed if there is no game play for planetary building or empire building. Just want to make sure what I am getting into to.

Sins, more RTS than it is 4x. It does have some 4x themes to it but most are abstracted/simplified b/c its a RTS at heart.

There are no spy, in the sense of behind the scene espionage.

You can upgrade your planets, witch abstracts the actually planet management and such. All your building critical to the gameplay are orbital.

Most of your research is combat/economy related. So you build more ships and make your ships better.

The very heart of this game is the combat, as it an RTS. Diplomacy, economy, and such is all just secondary support to making things go Pew pew pew, Kerblam.

There are mods that add more 4x feel to the game, but you wont get a Master of Orion, or Galactic Civ empire building out this game.

Closest thing to spies is if you play as the Advent, you can research the ability for your culture to reveal enemy planets. Technically the TEC have probe droids that can be deployed from their scouts to do a similar task.

There's non-military research. You can make your trade routes more profitable, make your civilian structures be able to phase out to protect themselves, and even research pacts that let your share technology with your allies to give both of you a boost to certain things.

There are no specific buildings on planets, in Sins space is really the only thing that matters. Your planets are just a source of taxes and anchors for your orbital structures.

I don't know exactly how you define Empire building but for an RTS in my opinion Sins is the best game for it. Its just since it is real time putting some of the things that are in turn based games would be overwhelming.

Thanks guys, so there is more to just than building ships. I like we can upgrade planetary stuff even though it's abstract/simplified.
