Help me win

I have a hard time even against normal difficulty. I like to play at my own pace and explore but the asshat computer just declares war on me and has much better units than me with barely any turns passed WTF!

Do i just spam cities?

Also the research tree is confusing, what the hell should i even bother investing in early on

Hey,

There are a number of different play styles, but here's my approach.

The key to keeping the other factions off your back is your power rating. as long as it's higher than the others, they (usually) won't bother you. In addition to spamming cities, build as many units as you can. Level up and upgrade their weapons and armor at every opportunity.

Also, accepting trade routes and economic treaties will make the others civs act less aggressively toward you (at least for a while)

Also, focus on the military tech tree (although not exclusively). This will help prepare you should another civ decide to attack, and a stronger army is more effective at killing monsters, which will level up your sov and heros faster if you can plow through any and all monsters in your path.

When I'm in the mood to focus on the RPG aspects of the game, I select a large map with just one other facton, which reduces the likelyhood of early and mid game conflict.

Well, there are many ways to win...

One way is to spam cities. If you produce and research the most, the AI won't dare attack you. Also, be sure to trade as much as possible with your opponents.

Another way to win is to build a Stack of Doom and crush everything in it's path. If you like to explore and do quests, turn off 'magic victory' and take the trait Wanderlust.

More specific tips:

- Create a custom Sovereign with a custom faction. Picking only strong traits makes the game much easier. Top faction traits: Enchanters, Master Scouts.

- don't be afraid to use ctr-N. The best tiles have 9 yields in total in grain/material/essence. Starting (directly!) next to a forest or river also provides bonuses. Last but not least, some resources nearby (shards, ore, horses) is always a plus. Just use Ctr-N if you start in a swamp or desert. I won't judge you :)

- I'd suggest researching the first 3-5 techs of Civilization first. After that, some Magic, Warfare and more Civ. Imo, it's more useful to research many of the 'cheap' techs than beeline towards endgame techs, unless you know what you are doing. Obviously, if you have certain resources, you'll want the techs to develop them.

Research the first three techs in the civilization tech tree. Then, IMO, focus on the military techs.

I recommend no more than one sovereign and one hero per party, otherwise it will take a really long time to level up.

Build everything. There is no restriction, limitation, or negative consequences in doing so. Which ones you build first depends on your needs. For example, if you have high unrest, you may want to construct a bell tower before other buildings.

Learn about blacksmithing tech and embrace it.

It will keep you slightly safe until you reach pikes level of tech in military tree.

Pikes level is the "endgame" of the weaponry until you get to the end of magic tech tree.

Don't forget about civilization for developing your cities either.
