Blind Tech Advancement

I Loved This system in SMAC and think it would be very cool if it was included as an optional way to play for GCIII

Basically you don't choose which Specific Technology to research yourself, you instead choose a general path to follow. So we would Choose from:

Military: Guns and Shields

Diplomacy: Learn to get along with your neighbours and manipulate them without weapons

Exploration: Faster Ship Engines and Better Scanners

Building: Everything to do with Planetary infrastructure

And the game will choose one of these type of techs to research at random from the ones available to be researched. At any time in the game you can change your focus to another area, you can choose to split your focus in more than one area, or you can choose every area to essentially have no focus at all.

I can see how attractive it is to some people to want a game to do all of the work for them, but I, like many, am a control freak, so I would find a game that did all of this for me without my being able to tell it I didn't want it to do this would not be fun for me. I enjoy trying to outwit a game.

This is why I said optional, highlighted in OP now to be more clear.

Missed that. Sorry.

I wonder if a modder would be able to do it.

Dido, but I guess it doesn't matter if it is an option. I would never use this myself.

I have one problem and that's the fact that you'll need to research different techs at different time.

Can you be more specific of how this is a problem? My suggestion does not let the Computer pick a Tech to Research that you wouldn't be able to select manually.

I like the idea of blind tech research.

Knowing future techs does nothing for game immersion.

Tribal thinker.

"Chief, I have invented this cool new way to build houses. I call it Wattle and daub"

Chief

"Yea.., It's good but...

looking at these future techs, I think it would be wise to skip the mud and sticks, bypass the timber and go straight for the bricks and mortar.

Oh, and while your at it, get someone on this 'light bulb' thingy. Its going be a while before this Edison character pulls his finger out."

Joking aside.

For those who play for fun whether they win or loose, it would be cool if,

Not all techs were guaranteed.

Certain techs could only be researched by having access to certain raw materials.

A sort of mix between SOTS and CIV.

Optional of course.

You're asking what he is talking about. Well this is my understanding of what he is talking about from my perspective versus your perspective. When you play a game you actually need techs from most areas. I guess you can play a game without touching influence, logistic, planetary defense, and fleet enfancement techs, but most of the areas are usually touched. The post is probably not talking of having any of the other techs, but covering the minimum of techs required in different areas. Specialization doesn't mean that they wouldn't include the need for other techs.  This would pretty much garantee that the non warlike factions could not fight. Why am I playing this kind of game if not to pick my techs anyways.

1. The need for different techs usually change between games minus things like planetary improvements and economics.

This is why I could not play under that option. This would change my gameplay style from being an economic giant into forcing me to be warlike. Later on I wouldn't be able to change my research stradegy to being warlike. If we pick a path to research I couldn't imagine that changing paths later on would work. Playing like world war 2 United states would not work in this kind of game. If this is an option it wouldn't matter, but if this wasn't an option, but how the game was run then I wouldn't play the game over this.

Ah Right, well you wouldn't be stuck with the same path all through the game. you can change it at any point or can choose to focus in more than one area, or every area(essentially no focus), you just wouldn't be able to see what you are researching. Sorry I forgot to mention that. Also Tech Trading will still be an option.

I really, really, really hate surprises. For me this would be no fun at all. I am really glad you are proposing this as optional.

Sorry, but as an option this would not matter. I guess as a tutorial method this wouldn't be so bad to learn the game. But basically I want to be able to pick my techs. I also like the idea that I can plan my techs by seeing the tree. I don't think it would be to hard to make this an option. I also thought of another option. This would let you pick the techs it wouldn't let you see the rest of the tree this would have you guessing where it would lead.

In a Scored game, where players are playing for the score, your idea would just mean they would have a printed off Tech tree next to them instead and thus gain a higher score for using such an option(if it exists) without earning it. With the Blind Tech Advancement though, you can give the players a higher score for using it, and they would have really earned it.
