I almost debated not posting this as it almost doesn't apply.  But if you want to see something incredibly powerful and moving then please click and watch.

To tie it in with GalCiv (or any game that explores the boundaries beyond our planet),  it would be such an incredible feat to be able to invoke the feel of this vid into a game.  To make it feel like not just a planet with statistics and happiness levels but as something you can really connect to. I actually think Homeworld came pretty damn close.   I'd curious if something like this would ever make it to a tbs.

Just a thought.  Just wanted to share.

"The wonderful Earth has long been held in high honour by the Human race, but only after reaching full enlightenment did its citizens feel a true connection between them and their homeworld. Citizens not living on Earth plan yearly pilgrimages to the revered planet, while Humans lucky enough to reside on Earth are continuously advancing the study and teaching of Terran history. Through government grants, public contributions and countless volunteer hours, Humans on Earth work tirelessly so that no Human forgets where they came from, or which planet they can always call 'Home'"

Still strikes a nerve just thinking about that. Carl Sagan's little speech moved me to tears the first time I heard this as well.

I'll support this wholeheartedly

I don't think we need this argument about reality in the game too..

After all the sun is approx 1.3 million times the size of the Earth, and about 150,000,000 km/ 91,000,000 miles away on average.

So could you imagine trying to create a game based upon the science and the pure sizes of objects of everything with distance?  Once again it's a game, it gives simple representations of objects not based on scientific fact, it's just based in space.

Why don't we just let the game be what it is, and leave the studying for school, and just enjoy it for what it is :)

I didn't see it as an argument for reality in terms of size.  Its not the size of the planet, but the significance that it has and what it evokes to be tied to it.  I offer no solution for how that could be incorporated, but to be able to turn a planet from a statistic to an invested connection I think would be incredible.

I've sat in awe of this speech and watched it about 5 times in the last hour.  Seriously one of the most moving things I've seen in awhile. Wish I'd known about it before.

Give the AI an attachment to it's home planet... as it should...

Although everyone has attachment to something different and someone born offworld for instance and becomes the leader of a race may not be tied the the race home world at all but in fact may be tied more to their home planet instead... and be more willing to give that up than the planet of birth, or may have feelings of different worlds for different reasons.

A completely robotic race would instead be more concerned of a logical standpoint then an emotional one and therefor would be more willing to give up a world it was created on and keep a higher production/resource world instead.

I think you missed six zeros there.

True, the physical universe dictates that the earth (or any planet) is miniscule in the big picture of the galaxy. But as the Warlord (or Peacenik) of my race, I need to see a strategic map that is useful for me to engage in my conquest (or pacification) of the known universe.

Let those who oppose me in the galaxy beware. I have the GC III operational projection of the universe, and it is better than the competition!  I also have 500 Rigellians operating as organic computers updating the operational picture in real-time based on telepathic links with other worlds and fleets.

Thanks for pointing that out corrected :P
