If you kill a monster in its lair but dont plunder, will it respawn units?

Title says it all really. Now that we need to kill bandits for dead population, I would like to know how this works. 

 

A lair with bandits will spawn small armies now and again. If I kill the bandits in the lair, but never enter it, will it still spawn small armies. I believe that it will not, but I am not sure.

It should still spawn bandits, as long as the lair is intact.

I thought that once the icon on the lair turns from purple into green it's basically just a place to pick up loot. Maybe I'm wrong?

Yeah, green huts can still spawn monsters and turn purple again. Although not all lairs will spawn monsters, some only have the one on top of them.
