Deciding which Victory Type to Pursue

How do you decide whether to go for The Spell of Making victory or the Quest victory (if that particular wildland is present on your map)? In a close game choosing the wrong one of these two can cost you the campaign. So how do you decide when both are available? Thanks in advance

If you feel like you might lose the game, I would go for whatever is easiest.

If you have a powerful Stack of Doom, I would go for the Quest. In my experience, the Spell requires lots of Research and/or the ability to destroy your opponents' Towers. If you already have both, you might as well win by conquest.

The ultimate quest is pretty fearsome. If you don't have a very powerful, levelled army & heroes already it might be easier to just casting the Making spell. I don't understand what fallenchar refers to by talking of destroying opponent's towers; if you're far ahead in Magic research it might be easier to just rush the Towers and go for the spellcast while just defending. It's also going to be much easier casting Making if you're playing a Huge map and the ultimate quest is located on the other side of the map in hostile territory.

If you are far ahead in Research, you can win any way you like. Unless you decided beforehand to try a Spell of Making victory and beelined Research towards that.

Otherwise, the Quest victory is the only way of winning if you feel like you are losing. If you are in a war and reached a stalemate of sorts, Spell of Making could be an option, while the Quest could still be too difficult. But I have never been in that situation myself.

Just do what I do and turn off the spell victory condition.  Then the decision making process becomes much easier.
