No means of preserving troops

I'm looking at preparing an army for some dragon hunting. Given their ability to one-shot entire formations in a single go, a cape with 50% fire resistance and high armor are an absolute must. So I'll just upgrade those militia members I've been keeping alive all game long with... oh, I can't. I don't have the trait for plate mail, I can't upgrade their non-armor equipment for more initiative to offset the plate mail even if I could get it, and hey my archers can't even get the cape. I can't retrain these existing high level units at all it seems, just throw them away and start all over with new, low-health units. Am I missing an upgrade option here, or is there really no point in working for long-term unit preservation since I'll need to dump them all anyway to use them in late-game monster hunting?

You can design new early game units with the traits you specify. Then the trade off comes at is it really worth that extra 30-60 production early game when you are creating 3 production, to have the traits you need for late game units. There is always a trade off and that is where the customization comes into play. Although, I find that high level early units are very good units, even with the disadvantages you bring up. Their health and weapons upgrade quite well.

There are also building upgrades and choice of experienced to get these units from level 1 to level 4 from the start.

I can't add non-armor equipment to units until that equipment has been research, so that type of gear can only be added to brand new units. I guess wearing a belt requires special barracks-only training that can't be learned in the field. Some of my units also won't upgrade their armor at all, such as the aforementioned archers. Level 4 is a paltry amount of health relative to level 10 or even 14 like my troops are at right now, so I'm looking at taking a massive hit to health for this required rebuild.

That does answer my question though: I haven't missed anything, I do indeed need to scrap all of my troops to give my army minor gear upgrades.

Like parriotmath said, it is a trade off. Regular units are supposed to be different from champions that can always switch to different gear. Your experienced troops from the beginning of the game still are very valuable due to having much higher hitpoints and spell resistance compared to new troops. But they were built when your faction was still pretty "ignorant". Since you unlock and build lots of stuff that increases the base stats and flexibility in equipment of your troops you need to train new and specialized troops to keep competitive, like training special units to slay a dragon. I really don't see the problem with that.

Now, when you are designing units if you choose upgrade to the best equipment button (the up arrow icon), your troop will upgrade those items along that path. But you will have to choose the Armor Proficiency (which is available at the beginning of the game).

I do understand the pain of not having the ability to customize the troops on the field, but that is what the advantage of champions and henchmen.
