[Poll] Boats or no boats?

I've yet to see a successful implementation of boats in an TBS/RPG/4X game. Would you like to see Stardock try?

(Personally I'm slightly negative (-½), as I'd prefer that effort spent on other parts (UI, exploits, dragon mounts, etc.))

Somewhere down the line maybe. I'd also prefer some UI work and some general polish first.

No boats please.

I'd prefer North-South and East-West world wraps.

Yes to boats, but I'd also like to see a number of features added/improved upon beforehand.

Features like more polished, realistic, and interesting battles -- with legitimate obstacles that actually block projectiles, objects that can hurt a unit if knocked into them, ranged weapons that actually have a limited range of usefulness, varied elevation with cliffs that are actually dangerous etc.  After that, incorporate legitimate dungeons, more creative options like designing your own palace, bring back dynasties with far more options on raising your children (deciding who they will become thus enhancing their stats, more options for betrothal or simply 'selling them off' etc).

...and perhaps after all THAT, I'd consider implementing coastal buildings and naval warfare. ;)

I would love to see HoMM style boats, ie transports. That would open up maps making it harder to be cornered and give us tons of new places to explore. It would also make water look better if it actually contained stuff and had more details.

They've got boats in some of the pre-made maps.

I'd be OK with boats if they were very abstracted. Like you could sail from one city to another and it would take a set number of turns. Crusader Kings style. The map could also have resources for "port towns" that you could sail to and from.

Idon't really care but the less I need to manually control boats the happier I'll be.

I'd much prefer some all land maps, water is currently nothing more than a border.

no boats.

I don't think water combat would significantly increase the gameplay aspect, but would add a lot of complexity.

I liked having the boat in the scenario but it was too slow.

Boats could start off being just transports but with combat between them being between the units they carry.  Boats without units would have no defense or attack.

Boats could be built when a city has a dock developed.   Allow cities at a beach to develop piers etc.   Allow pier when a city grows next to a river or beach.

No boats - added complexity and doesn't seem like the benefit would be much.   I subjectively dislike naval combat/units outside of a primarily naval game.

now, teleport stones/Loci on the other hand...   Cloud walk and flying carpet are good, almost too good.      Nice teleporter makes a good strategic resource.

Civ V (GnK) turned the boats into "melee" units. It seems to work ok that way. Boats are fine as long as the AI knows how to use them otherwise it's too cheesy.
