Leveling Help

Hey folks, played Beta for a while. I took a break to play XCOM:EU. I'm back again. I'm having trouble leveling my heroes. My standard policy is to start questing/monster slaying with my two starting heroes and then splitting them off with trained units. My problem though is that other than Mites/banished Ogres, most critters are eating my heroes. I'm currently playing on Challenging difficulty. So how are you guys doing it? Thanks in advance.

They wanted to make the trained units a bigger part of the game so they weakened the heroes significantly.  Your standard policy will need a slight modification to include a group of clubmen or spearmen.  If you're playing Magnar, use slaves.  If you're using Resoln or Pariden, you can summon warg.  If you're playing a beastlord, well you get the idea.  The point is no more soloing.

I find that 1 hero can take on several critters by themselves. For the quest rewards it is better to group them together as they get full xp and not divided xp. This should level up your heroes enough to take on some of the meatier critters.

I find that sometimes depended on production rates (i.e. high production to start with 3 or higher) I build a militia unit first and then a pioneer. This gives me some extra umph in the beginning with the champions.

Don't forget about salted pork. That stuff is really good to heal your character.

I always buy one or two salted porks on turn 1 for my sovereign, then at once go out with him alone killing monsters one by one. My second hero I use for scouting nearby areas, some garnison duty now and then to decrease unhappiness, and to join my sovereign in every quest I take (quests don't share the experience among the heroes I think). The champion is also used to transport loot I don't need back to the capital to be sold.

After this phase it's unit building time, and one and one hero with his own army going bananas all over the place.

NB! Since your first money will go to salted pork and hire of a hero, the thing you should research first with this start is restoration, and build a workshop asap. You will not need the rush buy ability for a long time. I often go straight for horses after restoration and knowledge actually, if I think I'll have enough money for a horse for my sovereign so early on.

Thanks again folks, the salted pork and extra unit(s) let me get over the hump. Someone needs to tell the AI to do the same, because 2 were toast by the 25th turn.

Perhaps Froggie the Boy can halp the AI to start eating some more pork during tactical combat? I'm pretty sure the AI never bring salted pork to battle, and certainly never uses a turn to eat it.
