Scrolls & Perishables

Probably a dumb question, but how does one recognize certain items to be "one time use" and others that are "for the duration of the game".  For instance...I quaffed a couple of potions that I thought were going to add to my stats permanently, but they were only "one time use" and I couldn't tell from the description, so they were wasted.

Is there a bulk list out there (like the spells .pdf) which gives this kind of info?

Thanks for the help!

the consumables are listed in the hiergamenon... you might try and find your answer there.

As a rule:

If you can equip it, it's permanent.  Equippable items appears in a specific row.

If you can use it out of combat, it's a permanent bonus, but the reverse is not true, i.e. just because something can be used in combat, does not mean that it is not permanent.

If you cannot use it out of combat, chances are, it's temporary.

One big exception, which in my book is a bug: if a summoning item can be used out of combat, but is used in combat, the summon may go away after the combat is over. That may or not may be still true, because since I learned it could happen, I stopped risking it.

I've looked through the Hiergamenon, and it seems more of a history text than a useful (and searchable) reference for items found in the game.  For example, I see no section including consumables...

The in-game hiergamenon is useful (not searchable, but things are listed alphabetically). Look under equipment

Yeah I found nothing in the Hiergamenon either, nor googling.

I thought maybe something to do with the coloring of the items was the key.  Oh well, can always save and reload before using an item as well.

Just sucked when I found out that I could have had my Sand Golem active for many turns before I tried it because I thought it was for a single battle.  Restarted my game because of that.

Yes it can be quite confusing.

Just found a rainbow potion (forget name) which tells me it makes the user impervious from normal damage for 3 turns.  I'm guessing that means combat rounds and not game turns (i.e. seasons) but who knows?

Makes sense, I was referring to the online Hiergameon, much to my chagrin.

The general thing I figured goes if I can use it on the strategic map then it's made for the strategic map. If I can't it's a tatical map thing. There are exceptions for this rule, but generally that's a good way to start.

Some of the new wines and ales add things permanently and some are just combat.

One gives you 10% poison resistance and that seems to be permanent.  The Quendar Wine is tactical.
