Countdown: 7 days to release

Countdown: 7 days to release

There's only a week left! That's just so hard to believe that we're almost there.

Looks like there's going to be another public update tonight. They want to test out some installer improvements and...well since they were doing that, we snuck in some tweaks, fixes and I ninja-checked in some AI improvements.

The team that started Fallen Enchantress includes virtually everyone who made Galactic Civilizations II (and expansions).  It's been a real joy seeing the team together again and teaming them up with Derek (Kael) and Jon (Shafer).

For me, it's been a much more enjoyable experience than anything I've worked on before. Having someone dedicated to the design and to the project itself has made a huge difference to both team morale and the quality of the game.

Just after lunch today, with my iPhone in hand, I went through Studio A's lab area and talked to some of the coders and artists. Here's the video:

I nver use ctrl+n. It's just making the game easier for yourself, why would one want that? I like the challenge of a not so optimal starting location.

Sorry but could someone explain to me what CTRL+N does or when you use it?

Thanks!

And great video BTW. I'm really looking forward to the final release - I've never played WoM but I recently pre-purchased Fallen Enchantress on Steam and after trying the beta I have to say it is excellent. The only thing I would change is to have the tactical battles made a bit more in-depth and strategic, as they feel a bit basic on first impressions. Other than that though it appears to be an awesome game.. it's as if you read my mind and pretty much made the game I wanted to play!

CTRL+N is a cheat. When people don't like thier starting postions and don't want a game to be too challanging to begin with they will hit CTRL+N until they get the LEET KWEL best starting choice.  It's lame but a lot of people seem to do this.  But everyone plays these games differently and everyone has a different definition on what they concider a challange.

I don't like long games, so I'll use CTRL-N until I find the worst possible starting location.  Then, I'll be crushed immediately and can go do something else!

Forget Ctrl+N... give me Ctrl+L (quick load) too!  I seriously can't stand getting 3 leather boot for my Sovereign when I KNOW that there are boots and cuirasses in those treasure tiles!

Even if Ctrl+L crashes the game as much as loading does not - I'd be pretty happy!

Sure! You can use ctrl+n right at the start of the game, just after the map is generated. If you then hit ctrl+n the game will generate a new map for you and thus a new starting location. You can do this till you're happy with your starting location. I think it's a nice feature, but I never use it since I like to take what I get. But other's use it a lot and have their own (good) arguments for it.

Thanks for the explanation.

I can't see myself using that, but it's always nice to have the option in case the game randomly generates something crazy.

I downloaded the new Beta patch on 10/16/2012 and none of the generated maps have trees..

It's an installer issue. Supposed to be fixed in .991, so you might try getting that patch and see if that fixes it.

I love this game a whole lot and am eagerly looking forward to it as much as anyone else but the last several patches seem to have introduced quite a few new issues. I sure hope that you are on top of everything and can get the release version into better shape in what's now only 6 days. I have to admit that this concerns me a bit. I hope you will consider delaying the release a little to fix more stuff if you find it is needed. You're so close to the prize, don't blow it now at two ticks to midnight. Godspeed.

I'm with the girl in black about the ctrl+n. Never use it.

I lower my head in shame. I use Ctrl-N.

There is no shame in using CTRL+N, each player should play the game they think is fun, I don't mind a rough start, but sometimes I use it because I just want that good start, usually I run with the rough one (4/2/1 is rather rough for example).
To people reloading and using Ctrl+N, keep playing the game the way you think is fun! ;)

CTRL+N makes sense. In a game with random map generation there's always a chance you will come up with a practically unwinnable starting point especially on higher difficulty levels. I like sticking with tough starts for the adventure and challenge of it, but if my goal was to win the game on the highest difficulty settings I wouldn't think twice about using it to my advantage.
