Does a unit upgrading its gear gain the additional bonuses from upgraded forges, or is that only for initial training? Also if it does gain the bonuses does it gain it twice as in an initial bonus and then another bonus each time it upgrades?
The bonus from forge is a "Base Bonus" to each defense stat, and doesn't affect armour, so it only gains the bonus from the forges that was in the city, from which the unit was created.
In the current system you have to separate the idea that the forge have anything to do with the crafted weapons or armour, and just think its a static +x to defense, like having the +3 defense trait, but for free.

Got it, but that seems like an inherent slight to units produced earlier besides the obvious smaller groups size. I wonder if there is a way to override that bonus as a unit upgrades? I.E. if a unit was produced in in one city and then sent to another city for upgrades. Could lead to some interesting combination of city talents and make more of those Unit When trained here buffs useful.
I think that is part of the strategy. Do you want to pump out the units early or try to hold off until you have built some better buildings in your fortress. I usually try to mix it up a bit. Lot of times those earlier units get taken down hard by some early big bad monsters nearby, so no major loss.
Well its ok, the city enchants work in the same way, making them on-off enchants (for me anyhow)
Currently it might be too difficult to provide a proper way to override them, without it just being a mess instead of a nice feature, personally I don't mind too much, I would rather see the "Upgrade System" upgraded
