I miss the beautiful immersive paper-interface.

I really do.. ALOT..
I very much dislike this modern galciv'ish interface visual style. Note, i love the improvements of it, i'm merely talking about the visual style of it. The skin if you will. And where the book / paper style still exists, it seems so white and clinical. I miss the warm paper tone.

FE interface is kinda reversed interface of WoM: it's dark instead of light. Not only interface: unexplored areas are black instead of light-gray (there is darkness instead of clouds). I like both and I like their consistency.

Initially I thought that the darkness of FE suggests evil (vs good). But no, it's more like darkness of forest or jungle (like darkness of outer space in GalCiv). And I like it as well.

I am a shameless promoter of modding, but if you have the time, the UI is extremely moddable. Go for it.

Yeah but even the tooltips are opague black. It just feels too spacey for a fantasy game. Paper fits all, evil or good.

Interesting story behind this:

In DirectX 9, if you want to use true type fonts, you need to use white on black because they are anti-aliased to a back blackground anyway.  This is the reason our fonts in WOM looked so terrible.  We had to come up with all kinds of work arounds for the crummy font handling of DirectX 9.

DirectX 11 fiixes the font stuff but since FE is a DirectX 9 game, we decided it would be better to pick our battles.

So now you know why every DirectX 9 supported game has light text on black background.
