Can't target Abeix

I just did a battle with Abeix. I wanted to spell the shit out of him, but couldn't target him. Is this a bug or a feature? If it's a bug, I think it's because of the the unreachable underground of Abeix. Also it was pretty anoying to have my fighter placed behind my archer. I had to give up two turns before I could move my archer away. Also, the map went all strange when an turn ended (not with other maps). And foremost, nice fight!

I couldn't target the guy at all, so I just got frustrated and hit auto.  I won, so the computer knew how to do it I guess.  It's not a very fun fight when you can't organize your army before battle.  Also, when you auto, does the game just throw your weakest units to the slaughter?  I had a group up champions and my Sov, and we found Janusk who was far lower in level and power than the rest.  When I auto attacked with that group he would be the only one to ever get hurt.  And if you get the dog, Annie, it never survives the auto attack.

Abeix doesn't seem targettable with anything ranged. :(  I was whopping every stack of every enemy in existence with my l33t archers, so I thought I'd go after Abeix ... only to find none of my ranged units were allowed to target him :(  And that's both arrows and spells :(

 

WTF ... some warning would have been appreciated. :(  Lost everything because I had set my stack of doom around a couple strong defenders and the rest mages and archers.  My 'strong defenders' couldn't get in front because of the 1 tile wide walkway,  yadda yadda, lost all my units. :/

I found one thing that's effective against him in actual combat (without using Auto):  The Storm spell.  It randomly hits one enemy, and he's the only one on screen.  With 10 Air Shards and a high-level caster, it's actually realistic to fight him this way.

I used blizzard. But it whould have been more helpfull if I could use graveseal, curse, slow and another hex I forgot. Also, I can't build the monument, Abeix still controlls the wildland while I killed him...
